I
always had a soft
spot for the
Nintendo compilation
of Mario Games… just
last year around
this time I thought
how cool it would be
to have
Super
Mario All-Stars
on the Wii. I wasn’t
about to be picky,
it could be either
as downloadable
content or just as a
straight-across
release. Why? For a
couple of reasons:
One because
Super
Mario All-Stars
had this miraculous
feature at the time
so you could save
your game and
because it had the
first four Mario
games together in
all of their glory
with updated
graphics.
I
doubt anyone was
reading my mind,
because the decision
to give a great game
a 25th
Anniversary (talking
about Super Mario
Bros. there
actually) release
is really a no
brainer- Nintendo
has put out a
limited edition
of
Super
Mario All-Stars
with a soundtrack
disc and a cool
booklet to go along
with a Wii disc that
has the compilation
with the four games
on it.
The
ability to save your
game varies from the
different titles on
this release. On
Super
Mario Bros.
you can only
continue with a save
after each world.
With
Super
Mario Bros: The Lost
Levels
you can continue
with a save after
each level. The
other two games are
similar to
Lost
Levels.
The graphics do look
better than they do
on an NES console.
They’re nice and
polished up and
although yes it’s
16-Bit, it’s better
than 8-Bit. The
other cool feature
with this disc is
the ability to play
with a variety of
controllers. You can
turn your Wii remote
sideways like the
old NES console
version, you can
play with a GameCube
controller, you can
play with the
classic controller,
or the classic
controller pro. I
found that the
classic controller
worked best with
this release but
everyone will have
their favorites.
The bonus packaging,
the ability to save
your game, the
updated graphics,
and the disc with
all of the games on
it is worth the $30
price tag. The only
flaw with the game
is that they left
the game unscathed
and didn’t alter it
at all. It’s great
to have 16-bit games
instead of 8-bit
games for graphics,
but what would be
wrong with using the
New Super Mario
Bros. engine to make
the old games and
minimize the
abilities you could
do but with Wii
graphics instead of
Super Nintendo
graphics. That would
be cool… it’s still
a great release, but
somehow it feels a
tad lacking… that
would cure that.
The other thing to
note on the negative
side- if you want to
download these games
to your Wii console
through Nintendo’s
online store, it
amounts to be 2100
points- that’s $21.
Is the music and the
booklet $9 in
content? I think so,
but not everyone
will.
The
Limited Edition
of
Super
Mario All-Stars
is a worthwhile
purchase for any
Mario fan. Judging
by the rise of the
popularity of retro
gaming, there are a
lot more out there
now than there used
to be. It’s great to
have this release on
the Wii because of
the ability to save
your game.
Everything else is
just an added perk.
If you ever wanted
to beat every Mario
game out there- this
would be where to
start. Plus the
bonuses should
satisfy your
appetite for
everyone’s favorite
plumber.
