Splice
comes to Blu-Ray,
and one of the
year’s most original
horror films ends up
being disappointing.
If you like movies
in the horror genre
then you need to
stay away from this
one. It’s not scary,
it’s just
disturbing. It’s
made for shock
value…. Not for
scare value. There
are a couple of
lessons to this
movie though- don’t
mess with nature and
don’t get too
involved with crazy
women. Valuable
stuff.
Clive
Nicoli and Elsa Kast
are two hot-shot
scientists that
specialize in
splicing. They’ve
spliced a bunch of
animals to make a
creature that
secretes pills for
livestock. The two
creatures mainly
look like overgrown
cells. They look
like giant bags of
blood and goo, but
they can slither
around. The two
spliced-creatures
are successes but
Clive and Elsa want
to push the
boundaries and
incorporate human
DNA. The company
that they work for
forbids it, but Elsa
talks Clive into it
and she keeps
pushing him and
pushing him. With
ease almost, they
make a creature with
the splicing
technology that’s
part human and part
animal. The whole
time Clive knows
it’s wrong. He tries
to stop Elsa.
He
tries to keep it
from going out in
the world. Clive
drags his feet with
everything regarding
the project. But he
can’t stand up to
Elsa (who happens to
be his partner and
his girlfriend.)
Elsa keeps pushing
things further and
further against what
Clive wants. This is
why you never get
too serious with
crazy women. Things
like crimes against
nature happen.
So Clive and Elsa
have created this
creature. She grows
and learns and they
call her Dren. It
goes through various
unnatural states to
where it finally
looks (mostly)
human. The creature
then begins to get a
crush on Clive, for
some reason he
sleeps with it
(gross) and then
escapes from the two
scientists’ control
and develops into
too crazy of a
thing. Dren just
gets creepy…. It
dies but not before
other people die,
roll credits.
I
don’t know what to
say about
Splice.
There is a moment
here and there where
you might jump, but
mostly it’s
disturbing and just
holds a lot of shock
value. If you like
that type of thing
then this is for
you, but if you like
to be scared more
than shocked then
this isn’t for you.
It’s not totally
believable, but it’s
not completely
unrealistic so it
has that going for
it too.
It’s not that this
movie doesn’t have
some things going
for it, even though
it’s limited. Adrien
Brody as Clive is
awesome. It seems
like he’s in
everything now, but
nothing of high
value, which sucks.
But he’s a great
actor and this movie
doesn’t do him
justice. I hate the
story, but the
special effects are
tremendous. Dren
always looks creepy
and the different
versions of her all
look amazing.
There’s nothing to
gripe about with how
this movie looks,
but when you combine
incest with
beastiality… too
much.
The feature isn’t
great but some
people will like it.
Those people will be
disappointed by the
extras on this blu-ray.
There’s a short
making of and not
much else. It comes
with DVD and Digital
Copy in addition to
the Blu-ray so it’s
not a complete loss.
The commentary is
missing and I would
have liked to listen
to find out
why…well… just why….
Splice
isn’t scary, it’s
just shocking. You
won’t get scared
with this movie
unless you’re easily
terrified but you’ll
watch with your jaw
dropped. That’s
probably what they
were going for, but
still…. Eeek.
