The Short: It’s not terrible, but it’s not exactly enjoyable either.

I wasn’t in the crowd that hated Space Chimps. I LOVED Space Chimps, mainly because the main character Ham, was voiced by Andy Samberg and I find Andy Samberg hilarious. This second movie doesn’t star Ham but it has Ham in it and no Andy Samberg, that was a major blow to the movie and the main reason I didn’t like Space Chimps 2.

Space Chimps 2 follows Comet the tech monkey. He didn’t get to go on the Chimps’ first mission through the wormhole. He stayed at home. When a new mission was announced, Comet was planning and looking forward to making the trip. When that was nixed, he gets upset and mopes around in the rocket. He accidentally initiates the launch sequence and he makes the back to through the wormhole to see some familiar places. On the foreign planet he finds his friend Kilowatt, explores their world and comes home only to find that the evil Zartog, once a lawn statue and undone by the Space Chips, is now unthawed and very much evil and alive. It’s up to Comet, Ham, and the rest of the Chimps to stop him from taking over the world.

Space Chimps 2 biggest problem is there’s no Andy Samberg. The issue that’s almost as big is that it follows Comet instead of Ham. The story isn’t one that you’ll connect to or have any feel to. What’s worse is there are maybe two or three laughs in the whole movie where there were tons in the first movie. This is a straight to video release and it definitely feels like it.

There’s not a lot to mention with Space Chimps 2. It’s a decent kids movie that they’ll laugh at and enjoy but it won’t be at the top of the pile for things they want to watch either. The original didn’t fare well with audiences, and the only thing that made the original good was Andy Samberg’s humor, was missing with this movie. It’s not terrible, but it’s not exactly enjoyable either.
