Most
TV to DVD out of the
drama genre isn’t
the re-watchable.
You know what
happens, it took
like 8 hours to find
out (sometimes
more), and you
probably won’t watch
it again. That’s not
the case with shows
like
Lost
where there’s stuff
to look back and
look up, but really
how many times can
you watch that?
Smallville
is different.
Smallville
is different because
every show or every
three shows bundled
together watches
like a movie. Great
writing, great
special effects,
great acting and
great stories make
these shows fun to
watch again and
again.
After a very odd
Season 8 where Clark
Kent/ Superman/ Red
and Blue Blur
squared off against
Doomsday, the man of
steel faces off
against a new foe in
Zod. He’s the evil
Kryptonian clone
sent to earth to
save his race from
extinction by taking
over the planet. He
has some of his
soldiers from
Krypton on Earth
with him (clones of
them anyway) and
they’re out to
change the Earth so
they can have the
powers of ‘the red
sun.’ That’s
Superman’s main foe
in this season and
it’s a fun storyline
that Superman fans
will love. There are
also a lot of extra
characters from the
DC Universe making
some great
appearances here,
including Green
Arrow (of course),
Green Glow, and the
Wonder Twins. The
love story grows
with this season too
with Clark and Louis
Lane having more
interest in each
other.
I
will admit that
other seasons of
Smallville
have been
disappointing to me
in the past. The
first few seasons
were cool, but they
lacked some of the
Superman charm that
makes the character
special. This season
is impressive. There
are lots of great
hat-tips to the past
and there are also
plenty of updates to
make a story that
has been around for
decades be a little
more modern. With
some homage thrown
in throughout the
shows, and some
great stories this
season is one of the
better seasons of
the show.
What’s special about
this season is how
it captures the
entire Superman
universe when the
character isn’t
exactly there just
yet. It does that
while introducing
some great DC stuff
as well. You’ve got
Clark’s relationship
with Louis. You’ve
got Clark doing hero
stuff as ‘The Blur.’
You’ve got his
friendship with
Chloe and his
alliance with Green
Arrow too. There are
great characters in
this season that
change and grow how
they should in this
season.
The extras on this
Blu-ray are a little
disappointing. Fans
of the show will
like what’s here but
they won’t watch it
over and over again.
There are some
commentaries, some
deleted scenes, and
a cool feature on
Zod to go through in
addition to some
other stuff, but I
get the feeling that
extras on Season 9
will look paltry
compared to what’s
going to come with a
Season 10 release.
Smallville: The
Complete Ninth
Season
is the show leading
into its peak. It’s
hard to believe that
this show has been
around for a decade.
It has to mention
how good Tom Welling
has been as Clark
Kent this whole time
and it will be
awesome to see him
finally become
Superman in Season
ten. Season nine is
a great lead-in to
the final season and
has some great
stories. It’s a must
for DC fans and a
must for fans of the
show.
