The Short: There are multiple reasons to pick up this bundle and they’d still be the same if it was priced at $75, but for $44.99… there really isn’t a better gift to give this Christmas.

Alongside of all of the home releases that Shrek Forever After is getting, the best release that DreamWorks/Paramount is putting out is a special Blu-ray pack that bundles all 4 Shrek movies on Blu-ray for the first time with Shrek: The Whole Story. You’d expect something like this- packed with Donkey’s Christmas Shrektacular, some Blu-ray exclusive bonus features, and some updated bonus features to be worth at least $60, but more than likely you’d guess that it would be worth $75… nope… DreamWorks/Paramount is putting a limited-time price on this of $44.99. That’s pretty much the best deal of the holiday season, and it’s a bargain price for a Blu-ray bundle that includes so much.

Shrek: The Whole Story has amazing video quality on each movie. All of the films look and sound like they did when they came out in theatres… Maybe even better. Shrek is a noticeable step up from the DVD version with the transfer just popping out on the screen. You can really tell how great the transfer is in the first 5 minutes during the opening scene in the swamp. The DVD version of the film was great- especially since DVD was just getting really popular when the movie was released to home video- but it didn’t look like it looked in the theatre. The great story was there, but the picture never looked as good. It looks stellar on Blu-ray and Shrek green on a high-def TV is something to behold. The video quality on all four features looks just as amazing. The sound is impressive too- initially it’s always been great with excellent music supervision, a great score, and excellent use of digital sound- here all four movies sound more amazing than ever.

The bonus features on each Blu-ray have different versions of the same thing. There’s an animated gallery where you can look at the artwork that inspired the design of different areas in the movie. Then there’s a picture-in-picture viewing version of the film that goes through different parts of making the movie. Both of those features are Blu-ray exclusives. As for DVD bonus features, each movie has a main-character spotlight that runs about 10 minutes long, each has a short “Secrets of Shrek” feature, each has a jukebox with songs from the movie, and each has a song from Shrek: The Musical. Shrek Forever After includes the Donkey Christmas Shrektacular, a BD-Live link to play songs from a bunch of different DreamWorks films, two other Christmas features, plus some more extra content revolving around Shrek Forever After.

Everyone loves the first Shrek, really everyone loves Shrek, and Shrek 2. Not everyone is crazy about the last two films in the series. People have varying thoughts on each of those. But there’s no denying that they’re all movies that can be watched over and over again and that just like Disney’s Toy Story- Shrek helped create the landscape of family films over the past ten years.  DreamWorks does some great work, but the Shrek series will always be their most notable because it was their first. There are multiple reasons to pick up this bundle and they’d still be the same if it was priced at $75, but for $44.99… there really isn’t a better gift to give this Christmas.

Shrek: The Whole Story is available on DVD and Blu-ray. Shrek Forever After is available in a Blu-ray/DVD pack and on a Holiday Double DVD Pack.

Quick Review of Shrek Forever After: Let's just all agree that Shrek the Third wasn't as good as the other Shrek Movies.  It lacked the passion and the charm of the previous movies, It's not terrible but it's not nearly as brilliant as Shrek or Shrek 2.

DreamWorks righted the ship with the fourth Shrek movie. Shrek Forever After is on the same level as the first two movies in the series. It had the heart and energy that the first two movies had and it had a great storyline. A very brief synopsis: Rumplestiltskin wants to be King of Far Far Away. He gets to by conning Shrek into returning to his life without Fiona. Shrek realizes how bad he messed up in the process and has find Donkey, Fiona, and Puss, win them over, and save the kingdom from Rumplestiltskin.

Everything that's lovable about the first two Shrek movies is in this movie. Maybe that's because Shrek has to build the same relationships again, but either way it's great to see these characters getting to know each other all over again.

Shrek: Forever After isn't as good as the first Shrek, but I would say that it's just as good as Shrek 2 and better than Shrek the Third. With a sequel like this there's always things that could have been done better, but the end product still ends up being a good one and a fitting end for a great franchise.
