The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay was one of the best Licensed-Games ever. It had focused on a story more than any other game of the genre had five years ago and throughout the game there was action, dialogue, and intensity. You sat at the edge of your seat when you played Butcher Bay. It wasn’t the longest game in the world, but it was pretty awesome. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena lets you play through that original adventure on the X360 along with a new adventure Assault on Dark Athena. The game comes in a two pack of sorts where you can play both games.  And while Butcher Bay still holds its charm, it’s not like it’s an updated version of the game. In lots of ways this game’s graphics and textures are terrible and some of the character animations are worse. The gameplay however remains outstanding in Butcher Bay with the exception of having to wander around a little too much than you should have to.

As for Assault on Dark Athena… It’s not nearly as good as Butcher Bay was and kind of is with this new installment. It lacks a lot of the character that the original game did. Mostly the game is about action instead of thinking/sneaking elements that the last game had. It’s mindless… a lot like Vin Diesel. (Just kidding…. kind of.) Anyway, Assault on Dark Athena lacks the originality the it’s predecessor had and although it looks better, it’s not the same game. The storyline in the game is terrible, and the last few stages are hard to get through, more because they’re frustrating, not because they’re difficult.

Surprisingly enough Diesel is the strongest part of this game. His acting is good as far as video game voiceovers go and he’s got some clever one-liners again in the game.  He actually did a solid job carrying the game in places.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is worth picking up if you’re a fan of Butcher Bay, but if you’ve played Butcher Bay and weren’t crazy about the process you can probably skip this installment. If you’ve never played the game before, pick up this game and play through Dark Athena first and THEN play through Butcher Bay. Basically what you’re getting with this game is what the last Riddick movie was… a B.
