The potential for Prototype was there. The first three or four minutes of the game are awesome. The initial cut scenes. Yup. Awesome. The fact that you are Alex Mercer- a dude infected with the an ultra-horrible genetic virus that makes you super human- available to absorb other people's life energy, shape shift, turn your hands into claws and swords, jump from rooftop to rooftop, smash tanks with an elbow drop... you get what I'm saying. Alex Mercer is awesome. Unfortunately Prototype is not the game that it should have been. I'm not sure it's the game that Mercer deserves.

The storyline goes like this. A horrible virus has taken over Manhattan and it has taken over your body turning you into a Zeus-type badass anti-hero with more powers than he knows what to do with. Your job as Mercer is to figure out who gave him the virus and who unleashed the virus on Manhattan. Along the way you'll face military opposition- infantry and mobile vehicles. And you'll also face some hatched nasty offspring of the virus and a bunch of zombies in New York. Not bad as a storyline goes. Basically you're Mercer and Manhattan is your playground for wiping out virus mutants and the military that's trying to get rid of you. It's an open world game where you go from event to event and mission to mission and overall it's very fun in that sense.

What's not fun. This game was about two months from perfection. The graphics aren't that great. The cut scenes are okay but overall the graphics feel like something you'd play on one of the older-generation systems. There's something cool about being the super-anti hero especially when you can do elbow drops on tanks- that is awesome! What's not awesome- a plethora of bad guys that aren't that hard to defeat. They're just too many of them clustered together. The enemies aren't that hard to defeat they just kind of cheat your way into 20 minute battles with 700 different enemies. Lots of action, but possibly a little too much. Sometimes you'll find yourself battling a group and you'll have to fly around and dodge for 10 minutes at a time because you're health has depleted and you need to regenerate after dodging bad guys and getting hit anyway. The gameplay can be frustrating and the graphics are frustrating. That can equal a rotten time for gamers.

The good parts of the game though- some of the moves in the game are nothing short of badass and the storyline itself is pretty badass too. Too bad the graphics aren't up to snuff with the environments and some of the bugs in the gameplay are pretty frustrating. With those few issues fixed a fun game could have turned into something amazing.
