The Short: In Planet 51 an astronaut from Earth lands on a distant planet that's supposed to be uninhabited. When he lands on the planet though he discovers that it's occupied by an 'alien' species and they're in the same spot culturally that America was in the 1950's. Different.

The premise of Planet 51 is pretty simple. What if we sent an astronaut to uninhabited planet only when he lands that planet is occupied with aliens and they're in the same spot culturally that America was in the 1950's. Pretty much a perfect time where a lot of ignorance and fear ran rampant. That's what Planet 51 is about in a nutshell.

Chuck Baker is an astronaut sent to the planet to take a few pictures and  grab a new samples. Only when he gets there he has to run for his life from the army and seek refuge with a local alien named Lem and his friends. The two form a friendship not based on how they're different, but on how they're similar. Chuck has to get to his spaceship which has been captured by the local army before time runs out and he's stuck on the planet forever.

Planet 51's humor steals bits and pieces from other animated movies that have came out over the past decade. There are several jokes throughout that the kids are going to find funny, but there are also several jokes that are aimed towards adults that kids aren't going to get. Shrek originated this tactic and about half the cartoons that have came out since have used it. These jokes all work in various points in the movie. The jokes that don't always work are the moments of panic  jokes.  They all feel redundant and the first half hour of the movie is centered around them so things start out fairly slow with Planet 51.

Planet 51 isn't filled with bonus features. The packaging is nice with a Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital Copy. As far as special features on Planet 51 its limited because it's a cartoon. There's a feature on the actors voicing their characters and really that's the only thing of note.

Planet 51 is a lot like another animated family films to come out recently. There's some boring moments and some good qualities but enough of the good outweighs the bad to make it a quality release.

Planet 51's soundtrack is a big disappointment. The movie is supposed to take place in a weird 'alien' version of the 1950's. Because of that it uses some 50's music. It doesn't use original masters though- they are mostly new recordings. It's disappointing because the music used to market the movie was awesome, it included Blink 182's "Aliens Exist" and the Killers' "Spaceman."
