The Short: Even with a few flaws, Pilotwings Resort is still a terrific title. It’s fun to fly in every way through the game and the courses are fun to play through and master. Plus with the way the title works, it’s the perfect 3DS launch title from Nintendo. There are lots of 3DS titles available right now with the release, but there isn’t a better one to pick up than Pilotwings Resort.

To go along with the release of the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo gave Pilotwings, a game introduced with the Nintendo 64, an update. Something that’s been long overdue. After playing through this game and having fun with it over and over again, I can officially say that it’s worth the wait.

Pilotwings Resort was really the perfect launch title for Nintendo to release alongside of the 3DS. With the 3D on the Nintendo 3DS turned on it looks fantastic. Flying around the 3D world that they created for this game is about as much fun as it gets with portable gaming. Everything looks amazing in 3D from the Mii characters that you create to the mountainous ocean island that you fly around in. Pilotwings Resort is the best looking DS title that I’ve played, even without the 3D turned on. With the 3D turned on there's really no contest.

What do you do in Pilotwings Resort? Well, it’s not exactly for the hardcore gamer, but if you feel like a taking a break from your day and doing something cool. Then this is a good title to play. You fly around this mountainous island region over water and around mountains in an airplane, a hang glider, or a jetpack. There are different courses to run through with different focuses. Some focus on completing the course as fast as you can. Others focus in on the perfect landing. Some focus on multiple things. There are a few courses that aren’t that much fun, but I can honestly say that most of them are a blast to play through.

The look and the design of Pilotwings Resort is outstanding. We went through this. The gameplay is equally cool. It’s really fun to strap on the jetpack and figure out the physics of the game and use how to use your thrust power to elevate perfectly. It’s also cool to fly around in an airplane and move in all different directions with seemingly no limitations. The hang glider is more difficult to use the first few times around but it’s a fun challenge and it’s enjoyable to learn how to master. That’s what Pilotwings Resort is about, mastering these courses and getting a good grade/ranking on each so you can move on to the next.

One of the best things about Pilotwings Resort is that you’ll be able to play it for a long time to try and beat high scores if you’re into that type of thing. The bad thing is that if you’re into playing something once through and then never playing it through again, then this probably isn’t for you. Another thing to note is that even though the area that you’re flying around in looks great, there’s not a lot of diversity to the different courses. It would have been cool if everything didn’t look pretty close to the same.

Even with its flaws, Pilotwings Resort is still a terrific title.
