When I was growing up Pete’s Dragon
was a movie that my mother loved.
She loved old Disney movies so she
made my brother and I watch them… a
lot. Pete’s Dragon wasn’t the worst
oneeither- there was actually a
little bit of action to it and some
drunkard humor that made it
entertaining.
Pete is an orphan… well kind of. He
got adopted by some evil mountain
people that force him to slave along
and wait on them- so when he runs
away we discover that he has an
imaginary friend… well kind of… a
dragon named Elliot that keeps Pete
company and helps him survive in a
world where he is very much alone.
So when Pete moves on and runs away
to a little town called Passamaquody
and befriends the lighthouse keeper
Nora and runs into a family
situation with her and her potential
father in-law things get
complicated. Pete has to balance his
newfound structure with Nora and
with school and chores with Elliot
causing confusion and general
ruckus.
The movie itself isn’t bad, sure the
songs get to be a little too much at
times but it’s a musical so it’s
something that little kids love and
will get into. What is great about
this particular version of Pete’s
Dragon is all of the bonus features
and add-ons that are thrown in –
this disc is chuck full of them
including some cool background on
Pete’s Dragon (even if it is in text
format) and a deleted scene/song.
Pete’s Dragon isn’t my favorite
Disney movie but it is a good one.
My kids have picked up on it and
like the songs and they especially
like the trouble that Elliot gets
Pete in to. A good bundling and a
good movie make this a great DVD.
