Knowing

X-Men Origins: Wolverine brings back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and tells the story of how he got his powers, where he came from, and how he lost his memories. Basically it’s a prequel to the X-Men  movies.  It takes Wolverine all the way from being a kid in Canada in the 19th century to being an ex-soldier turned lumberjack in times just before he joined the X-Men. While it’s a good story there are a couple of precautions to make before you jump into this movie.

If you didn’t go to the theatre to see this and you’re watching it for the first time, don’t come in expecting too much. That would be a mistake. This isn’t as groundbreaking as the first movie was and it’s definitely not as good as the first two movies in the X-Men series. It’s a different type of film that the original two films were.

It has a different tone to it altogether and that can be attributed to directors more than anything. In the first two movies Brian Singer brought a very serious tone to the movie. He got those serious moments out of his actors  and really he got the most of the script. With X-Men Origins, a less serious tone and more of summer blockbuster element is given to this film. A lot of that is due to  the stunts and the special effects and a lot of that is due to the shots chosen.

The movie itself is good- but only if you go into it with an open mind. If you go in expecting too much you’re going to be disappointed. That said if you loved the movie you’re not going to be disappointed by the Blu-Ray. It’s got some awesome features including commentary, deleted scenes, futurities, and my personal favorite mutant profiles where the producers and actors talk about each character. If you’re going to buy this movie don’t short change yourself and buy this on DVD. Blu-Ray is the way to go not only for the picture, the sound, and the bonus features, but also because you get the digital copy alongside of it. That’s still a huge selling point that lots of studios are getting right.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is good enough. It had a lot to live up to and it had a lot of holes to fill and a lot of quirks to overcome with those original movies. Still Hugh Jackman is an awesome Wolverine and hopefully they keep making X-Men Origins movies because there’s a lot of potential in making them. Especially making a movie about Xavier first starting the X-Men. This is a good movie that could have been great, that's the only disappointment.
