The Short: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is an American classic. There are lots of options for owning the film, and although the Blu-ray version would be the most recommended, if you haven’t made the switch just yet, this DVD Special Edition is a worthwhile purchase that you’ll enjoy for years to come.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a worthwhile movie. There’s no doubt in that statement. R.P. McMurphy’s metamorphosis in a mental hospital is an emotional two hours. Jack Nicholson was brilliant, as was Louis Fletcher, and director Milos Forman’s adaptation of the book is impressively cinematographed. You even see young actors that went on to long and impressive acting careers like Christopher Lloyd and Danny DeVito. As far as classic movies go, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest can be entered into the conversation as one of the best films of all-time.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest tells the story of R.P. McMurphy, a sycophant that fakes being mentally ill to get out of his placement on a prison work farm and into a mental institution. You can tell he’s not crazy from the beginning of the story, but you can tell he’s probably not right in the head by most peoples’ standards either. McMurphy slowly gets absorbed into the institution life, but he challenges the standards and the normal practices that the patients have to endure at the hospital and it causes all of the other patients to at least question what’s happening to them. The end of the story is a different beast, but One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a powerful film that will stick with you long after you’ve watched it and will still connect with you like it did the first time when you’re on your twentieth viewing.

There have been plenty of releases of the movie over the years and it’s available on a few different DVD releases, but the latest deluxe version of the film is worth watching. You get some collectors stuff like four different cards showing the artwork from the global marketing of the movie. You get a deck of cards featuring characters from the film. And best of all you get a 52-page book with great pictures and information about the film. Those are just the packaging extras. As far as bonus content you get an 87 minute feature with tons of cast interviews called Completely Cuckoo. It's an enjoyable feature, that any fan of the movie will enjoy.
