Disneynature: Oceans
is the third
Disneynature film
and it’s another
great addition to
the line of
documentaries. It’s
wonderfully filmed
and narrated and it
will let you take a
peek at what’s going
on in and around the
ocean… something
that makes up most
of our world, but we
know the least
about.
In
Oceans
you travel around
over 50 underwater
locations checking
out a variety of
fish and other
animals. You get the
playful jumping of
dolphins, the
ferocity of the
sharks and orca, the
beauty of the sperm
whale, and the
mystery of cuddle
fish and several
other creatures of
the deep. The movie
is beautiful… I
thought that
Earth
was impressive, but
Earth
is overshadowed by
the beauty of
Oceans.
On Blu-ray in
particular this film
looks amazing. It
looks like you are
right in the thick
of things in the
ocean with deep,
vibrant color.
There’s one scene in
particular, where a
school of fish pops
up, and it becomes
feeding time for the
rest of the ocean.
Dolphins, sharks,
and pelicans swim
and swoop and get a
taste of dinner.
It’s one of the
coolest scenes I’ve
seen in any movie.
It’s so spectacular
that it feels like
it was set up. It’s
not obviously… but
it’s remarkable to
see a flurry of
action in one spot
of a vast ocean that
otherwise looks so
calm. That scene
makes the movie…
it’s just
incredible.
Just as good as the
picture on this Blu-ray
disc is the audio.
Waves crash and
bang. You hear-
squeaks, squeals,
moans, and chirps on
a nature movie that
you’ve never heard
before. The visual
beauty is to be
expected…. What’s
the point of doing
this on Blu-ray if
it’s not gorgeous?
But the audio track
for a nature movie
is something you
don’t expect a ton
from…. They did a
remarkable job with
both for
Oceans.
You might not be
able to tell someone
all about the ocean
from watching this
movie (you’ll learn
plenty though)…. But
you can tell them
all about Blu-Ray
and high-def picture
and sound.
The
extras on this
package are pretty
basic. There are a
couple on the DVD
that are worth
checking out but the
short 9 minute
featurette on the
Blu-ray disc is
straight-forward
with very little
information. The
real draw is the
living menu… it has
some creepy music…
but you can check
out different parts
of the ocean from
time to time and
check out a
different creature
with a short video
clip. It’s not much,
but the concept is
cool with your BD
Live connected
player and it’s
better than nothing.
The other extra on
the Blu-ray is a
bonus music video
with Demi Lavato and
Nick Jonas- the same
song that plays at
the end of the
feature. It’s
terrible, there’s no
reason to feature it
on the movie or as
an extra and after
seeing the movie- it
seems dreadfully
short-sided. When
you compare the Snow
Patrol song use in
the preview of
Disneynature: Cats
or Coldplay in
Disneynature: Crimson Wing…
Nick Jonas and Demi
Lavato in
Oceans
don’t make a lot of
sense.
Disneynature: Oceans
is a clinic for Blu-ray.
The movie is
brilliantly narrated
by Pierce Brosnan,
the editing is
cohesive, the scenes
that they were able
to get for the movie
are fantastic, and
the picture and
sound is the best
you’re likely to see
on Blu-ray. The set
lacks extras… but
when you’ve got a
feature like this…
Who cares?
