The
Men Who Stare at
Goats
is one of those
movies that's based
on a true story...
that you wouldn't
expect was based on
a true story. Even
though everything
that happens in the
present of the story
that centers around
journalist Bob
Wilton (Ewan
McGregor) is
fictitious.
Everything that
happened in the past
is loosely based on
the U.S. Army's work
in the paranormal.
What you need to
know most is that a
dude really did kill
a goat with his
mind.
The
Men Who Stare at
Goats
is about journalist
Bob Wilton. He
stumbles upon the
biggest story of his
life when he
interviews a psychic
in Michigan. The
psychic tells him of
the New Earth Army
Battalion, and Len
Cassady, the man who
killed a goat with
his mind. While
thinking that the
guy was fairly nuts
he puts a wrap on
his story and then
his personal life
takes a strange
turn. His wife falls
for his editor and
Bob's life is in
shambles and he
becomes lost. He
travels to the
Middle East to try
and cover the Iraq
war but winds up in
Kuwait waiting to
get permission to
cross the border.
When he's in Kuwait
he has a chance
meeting with Len
Cassady and he
recognizes the name.
The two get
acquainted and Bob
ends up following
Len to Iraq to write
a story. Bob
narrates the story
while telling things
about Len's past and
their current trek
through Iraq until
finally Len gets a
chance to redeem
himself of some of
his sins from the
past and Bob gets
the chance for his
big story.
The
Men Who Stare at
Goats
is a quirky comedy
with its own sense
of humor. It centers
around the
ridiculous and in
this case the
ridiculous is
hilarious. It's
funny seeing Kevin
Spacey pretending to
be a psychic and
channeling his
spirit guide. It's
funny to see Len try
and cook hamburgers
with New Earth Army
technology and it
doesn't work. It's
funny seeing Jeff
Bridges character
talking the U.S.
Army into funding
six years of hippy
research.
It's
not exactly entirely
believable, but the
things that weren't
believable (most of
them) were based on
true stories.
The bonus features
on this Blu-Ray are
awesome. There's
even a look at the
real men that
inspired the movie
and a look at the
real New Earth Army
as well. The feature
is about fifteen
minutes long and
that feature alone
makes the bonus
content on this disc
something you'll
watch again. Other
than there are a few
other add-ons that
will make this a
comedy you'll circle
back to time and
time again.
The
Men Who Stare At
Goats
is an interesting
look into the
bizarre. It's
slightly confusing
to watch because you
never know if you're
taking it too
seriously or not
seriously enough.
Still, there are
some very funny
moments throughout
the movie and it's
an off the wall
comedy that everyone
can enjoy.
