Little Big Planet
was one of the most
innovative and fun
games on the market
when it came out. It
blends in with the
Twitter/Facebok/MySpace
generation like no
other game before
it. You can
customize your
character, create
levels, upload them
to servers and share
your creations with
other gamers. You
can also download
other user’s created
levels. In short,
Little Big Planet
is a fantastic game
and like no other
game before it.
Little Big Planet 2
had a lot to live up
to.
Like
most big sequels
like this though, it
does just fine and
adds a few great
features as well.
Although there’s not
a big overall story
to the game and it’s
more about creation
and sharing more
than anything else,
there’s a cool story
mode to play through
that features some
fantastic level
design. In the story
mode, it’s up to
Sackboy to save
Craftworld from the
evil Negativitron by
assisting some cool
characters known as
The Alliance. The
story’s fun and
humorous to go along
with how the last
game was, but the
cool feature about
the story mode is
how cool the levels
are designed. They
all look unique and
amazing with some
great textures,
they’re all
challenging in their
own right, and it
seems like a new
niche is added to
the game with every
level you go
through.
Of
course
Little Big Planet
2
is a 2D platformer
that operates on
depth. Meaning you
can play on three
different plains in
the game; normal,
front, and back. A
combination of going
from front to back
and the consistent
jumping are what the
game’s core is, but
the new controls and
features make it
more fun. You now
have the ability to
use a grappling hook
in several levels
which is insanely
fun. There’s also a
new launch pad
that’s featured in
the levels that
sends you
catapulting into the
air. And that’s just
covering the basics,
there’s also a very
cool cake gun that
creates platforms
for you to jump on.
The grapping hook
and the launch pad
are both great
add-ons to a great
game and they make
it insanely fun to
play through the
main levels and some
of the bonus
challenges too.
Speaking of those
challenges they
range from great
side-levels to fun
vs. challenges that
have you launching
yourself with the
aforementioned
launch pads to
collect as many
prize bubbles as you
can, tapping button
combinations fast
and furious at
prompts to beat your
opponent, and
blasting possessed
marshmallows with a
laser gun.
The
story mode is great,
and what developer
Media Molecule has
created is fantastic
too. But cooler than
that is the ability
that
Little Big Planet 2
has to create some
awesome levels. I’m
not going to lie and
say that I’m great
with creating levels
in the game- you get
in the feature and
it’s a little
daunting to figure
out how everything
works. But it’s
incredibly cool to
check out what
people can create
with these tools.
Plus, there’s
already some
fantastic content
available because
you can play through
levels created on
the first
Little Big Planet.
You can also go to
www.LBP.me on your
computer and search
for levels and mark
levels you want to
play later on your
PS3, which is a very
cool feature.
Little Big Planet 2
met expectations and
exceeded them in a
variety of ways. The
story mode is
better. Creating
levels and modes is
bigger and better
too. Sure there are
the same control
problems where it’s
not as responsive as
it should be and you
can get stuck in a
level even with the
‘retry’ feature and
have to turn off the
game. Both of those
problems can be
ignored though
because everything
else in the game is
so innovative. There
are a few games that
you have to own if
you’re a PS3 owner.
This is definitely
one of them, there’s
more content than
any other game on
the market, and the
ability to carry
over content from
the first
Little Big Planet
is a very refreshing
approach for Sony
and Media Molecule
to take. In short,
Little Big Planet 2
is fantastic.
