Kiki's Delivery
Service
is another animated
movie by Hayao
Miyazuki and Studio
Ghibli. It has its
ups and downs and
it's another movie
in vein of mixing
normal life with
fantasy.
Evidently when
witches turn 13 they
move away from home
and have to learn
how to be witches on
their own. Shortly
after Kiki's 13th
birthday she moves
away from her
parents and her
small town and she
moves to the city.
In the city she has
to find her way as a
person and as a
witch. She makes
friends with the
people that own a
bakery and she gets
to rent the room
above their house.
She also discovers
that because she's a
witch and she can
fly on a broom, a
delivery business is
a great job for her
to have. So she
starts her own
business and dives
straight into the
life of being an
adult. She works
hard and eventually
finds herself in a
rut. She has to
start having fun in
her life again
before she can get
herself out of her
rut and back to
enjoying life.
Kiki's Delivery
Service
is first and
foremost a movie
about a child
becoming a grown up.
She leaves her home
a girl but by the
end of the movie you
really feel that
she's a grown up
person. She's
overcome some
problems and she's
lived on her own for
awhile. She's a
young adult. The
movie doesn't just
show you how Kiki
turned into a person
but it shows you how
she turned into a
happy person and
that's the most
important part of
the movie.
Kiki's Delivery
Service
has the best cast
out the Miyazuki
movies. A young
Kirsten Dundst
voices Kiki very
well, but her cat
GiGi was voiced by
Phil Hartman. He's
identifiable in his
voice and the cat
feels like a Hartman
character. He might
not have had a lot
of big movies but
it's places like
this where you hear
his voice and
identify him that
you realize how
talented he was.
Kiki's Delivery
Service
is like the other
Ghibli movies.
There's a lot of
fantasy incorporated
into the story but
there's some real
life too. There's
also a theme
underneath the jokes
and all of the
awkward moments of
Japanese culture
that's about a
person coming of
age.
Kiki's Delivery
Service
is in the top tier
of these Ghibli
releases and a movie
your family will
enjoy.
