Josh
Brolin and Megan Fox
star in
Jonah
Hex.
Another DC Comics
film adaptation from
Warner Bros. The
movie is stylish and
cool and it looks
like it’s subject
material. It’s a fun
two hour adventure
with Jonah that will
leave you
disappointed, but at
the very least will
entertain you for
two hours.
It’s true that this
movie isn’t as good
as other DC/Warner
Movies… not even
Brian Singer’s
Superman. Jonah was
a rebel soldier
during the civil
war. His commanding
officer was Quentin
Turnbull and
Turnbull wasn’t what
you would call a
good soldier. He
started ordering his
men to kill innocent
people to strike
fear into the Union.
This didn’t sit well
with Jonah and Jonah
turned Turnbull and
the rest of his unit
into the Union.
Turnbull got away
but his son, Jonah’s
best friend was
killed. After that,
Turnbull got revenge
on Jonah by burning
his house down with
his family in it,
making him watch
them die, branding
his face, and then
leaving him alive to
suffer the grief and
agony of losing his
family. Jonah
basically dies, gets
brought back to life
by Indians, he then
becomes a bounty
hunter. He thinks
Turnbull’s dead but
he’s not… the two
square off in an
epic battle… Jonah
wins… the end.
This
movie was largely a
mess. The story took
too long to set up
and the only
character you really
get to understand is
Hex. Turnbull is
played over the top
by John Malkovich
(who overplays
everything.) Megan
Fox seems to be on
the screen for
roughly twenty
minutes. The story’s
flow is inconsistent
and frustrating and
the climax has no
power to it… what
should have been
huge… ended up being
lame. I really
wanted to like
Jonah
Hex…
and I will admit-
it’s entertaining
enough for you to
watch. It’s
frustrating because
saying this movie
could have been
better is the
cinematic
understatement of
the year.
Like I said, you
will be able to
watch this movie.
It’s entertaining-
it’s just not what
it should be. The
bright spot of the
film is Brolin as
Hex. He puts out the
right amount of
attitude and energy…
delivers dialogue
with the quiet power
you would expect,
and most of all he
provides key facial
expressions- Which
is saying something
because he was
wearing a ton of
makeup on to make
his face so it would
seem scarred and
disfigured. Jonah
Hex will disappoint
you but Brolin
won’t.
If
you like comic book
movies, you won’t
hate
Jonah
Hex…
you’ll be
disappointed by it,
but you’ll at least
be able to watch it.
When that’s the
winning statement
for a movie it
missed its sweet
spot somewhere.
Basically, this is a
renter if there ever
was one.
