It’s
not that surprising
that
Hot
Tub Time Machine
did well
theatrically.
It’s
ripe with debauchery
and it’s a true
comedy with no
resemblance of a
family film. It also
doesn’t have Judd
Apatow tied to the
title. Really it’s
something that’s
been missing in
comedy for awhile
now.
The set up is pretty
simple. Four friends
go on a ski retreat
weekend where they
hadn’t been in
years. The ski
resort isn’t what
they remembered from
when they were
teenagers… the years
haven’t been kind to
it. Their room is
oddly crappy and the
entire hotel smells
like cat pee. All is
lost until they open
the door to their
deck and find a hot
tub. A hot tube time
machine.
Unknowingly, the
four friends get
pretty drunk and
crazy in the hot tub
and get launched
back into the 80’s
when they were kids.
While
it’s not much for
plot points, there
are a lot of great
jokes in
Hot
Tub Time Machine.
They don’t come in a
consistent manner
and there are very
few small laugh
moments. When
Hot
Tub Time Machine
delivers laughs it
delivers them in
huge quantities
about every 10
minutes. That’s the
best way to describe
it…. The movie’s
strength is its
jokes and even its
look. When the
friends get sent
back into the 80’s…
the costumes and
sets are tremendous.
Everything looks
like John Cusack was
in his 20’s and not
his 40’s.
The movie itself is
great, the bonus
content on the Blu-Ray
is slightly
disappointing. There
are several cool
deleted/extended
scenes in the
unrated version of
the film, but other
than that that’s
really all there is
extra on the Blu-Ray.
It does get extra
points for having
digital copy
included.
Hot
Tub Time Machine
is something we’ve
been missing over
the past few years.
There hasn’t been a
dumb comedy made
that was worth
watching recently
until this one was
made. It’s not
something you’ll
want to point to in
physics class as a
basis for time
travel. And it’s not
something that
Denver Bronco fans
are going to care
for, but it’s a
funny romp into the
80’s with several
quality jokes.
