The
Farrelly Brothers
have had hits and
misses over the
years, but they’re
at least good for a
few laughs in every
movie they’ve made.
That’s the case with
Hall
Pass
too. It’s not nearly
as good as
There’s Something
About Mary,
but it’s there in
the upper-echelon of
Farrelly Brothers
movies with
Me,
Myself, & Irene
and
There’s Something
About Mary.
Owen Wilson and
Jason Sudeikis star
in this buddy comedy
of sorts about the
rut of marriage.
It goes like this….
Rick (Owen Wilson)
is a dad of three
young kids and a
real estate agent.
He’s been married
for a few years but
he’s been in a bit
of a rut with his
wife. Their
relationship isn’t
what it used to be
but they still love
each other. She’s
tired of him gawking
at other women and
wants this to be
remedied as well. So
she gets an idea
from her
psychologist friend
to give her husband
a hall pass. He can
have the week off
from marriage with
no consequences and
no hurt feelings,
when the week’s up
he comes home and
has it out of his
system. Accompanied
by his friend Fred
(Jason Sudeikis) the
two men try and hit
the town to get some
action in this
gross-out buddy
comedy from the
Farrelly’s. As you’d
expect… the single
life wasn’t as great
as they remembered
it.
Hall
Pass
is one of the
Farrelly’s better
comedy ideas. Have a
gross-out teenage
comedy, but instead
of using young
adults/teenagers as
the hapless males
trying to score, sub
in some married men,
who let’s face it
are even more lost
than teenagers. The
idea and the premise
of the story are
great and the
writing was great
too. For married
couples, they’ll get
and relate several
jokes and topics
here. It might not
look like a great
movie night watch
for couples, but it
actually is. Plus,
it’s hilarious.
There are at least
eight
side-splitting, just
funny moments in the
movie too. The jokes
here are some of the
better jokes that
they’ve had in a
movie in years. And
the best part of the
jokes here, they’re
very visual. Instead
of just saying or
showing something
funny, they really
use the camera to
their advantage with
behind the back
shots and some
brilliant tricks in
the editing room.
Hall
Pass
is a great comedy
and I had a ton of
fun with it.
The
bummer with
Hall
Pass
is the lack of
extras. There’s one
deleted scene that’s
roughly four and a
half minutes long
and features the
very funny Richard
Jenkins along with
Wilson and Sudeikis.
It’s actually a very
funny scene, but was
probably trimmed
down due to time
constraints. The
only other extra on
the blu-ray is a
short gag reel
that’s even a bit
lame for a gag reel.
Hall
Pass
is funny… really
funny. Despite a
lack of extras this
is a great comedy to
pick up on blu-ray
for any comedy fan.
Wilson and Sudeikis
team up well on
screen and feed off
each other
fantastically and
the Farrelly’s know
how to direct a
comedy.
