The Short: It’s still Guitar Hero… but there’s a twist… and this needed a twist.

Guitar Hero 6… err I mean Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock attempts to bring a story and a point to the game. Instead of releasing a new set of songs and gearing exclusively towards the living room party crowd, Neversoft took the idea of releasing a story mode with the game. This game ends up being the most fun I’ve had with Guitar Hero in at least three games. I don’t think this is for the hardcore Guitar Hero gamer because the story mode isn’t what those people are looking for. Also- the game is more random and difficult in its randomness than we’ve seen before, making it harder for the newcomer to come into too. Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is for the casual GH gamer. Not your mom and dad, but the people that play games but don’t play Guitar Hero weekly. There ya go. In my mind, if you love games and just like music then you’re not going to be crazy about this game. But if you love music and just ‘like’ games then you’re going to be a fan of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

The story mode is cool because it gives you a reason to keep playing other than just to unlock more songs and beat your high score. You play as specific characters in the game and you earn stars with those characters. When you earn enough stars as a character, you unlock the ‘warrior’ they become and then you unlock another character to progress the story. Most of the characters are cool and they play different styles of music- punk, oldies, mainstream rock, etc. And the narration of the story is done by Gene Simmons… I’m not a KISS fan, but he’s a badass and he does a badass job.

Other than the story mode addition there’s not a ton to report that’s new with the game. It’s got the same modes that were in Guitar Hero 5 under the hood and it utilizes a lot of the same features. The story mode is the main addition to this, and it’s not groundbreaking. It is a cool addition though and it made me keep playing this long after I would have been bored with it otherwise.

While this isn’t the game that makes Guitar Hero more than what it is, it gives the franchise a light at the end of the tunnel. What they should do to improve the series is simple- make this game again with the same concept of unlocking characters, but then add another dimension to the game.  What would happen if you combined Brutal Legend with Guitar Hero? Awesomeness. There are opportunities for multiplayer, unlockable characters to give you an advantage. TONS of things. That’s where this franchise needs to go and with this release the seed has been planted. Neversoft won’t get to develop the next venture though, so it’s up to the developer that gets the next game to bring something new to the formula.

This is the most fun I’ve had with a Guitar Hero game in a while. The story mode kept me playing and the writing of the story wasn’t terrible either. Gene Simmons was cool too. It’s still Guitar Hero… but there’s a twist… and this needed a twist.
