PlayStation and XBOX
360 owners get to
come to martini
drinking table again
this year with
Goldeneye 007:
Reloaded.
Last year around
this time Nintendo
fans were rejoicing
about the return of
Goldeneye.
What many people
still think is the
best first person
shooting game ever
made got an update
Daniel Craig/James
Bond style with a
new story and a new
look. And it got a
serious update on a
console that was two
generations away
from its original
home on the Nintendo
64. Activision did a
huge service for
Nintendo fans by
releasing the title
and it was greeted
with open arms. BUT
as cool as that game
was as a Wii title,
and really as cool
as the game is in
general, it doesn’t
compare well to
Battlefield,
Call
of Duty,
and yes even the
Halo
games that have been
released recently.
That’s not to say
that it’s a bad
title, because it
certainly isn’t. It
just doesn’t compare
well with bigger
updates and more
exciting campaigns.
In
Goldeneye
the same overall
line of story is
implemented that we
saw in the original
N64 classic. The
storyline itself
isn’t overly
exciting, what’s
cool about playing
this campaign/story
mode of the title
are all of the
subtle nods to the
original game. (Like
being able to shoot
the guard on the
crapper…. Nothing is
more Goldeneye than
that.) There are
also several other
moments like that in
the game. They
aren’t over-the-top
screaming look at
this moments-
they’re just subtle
nods that fans of
the game will really
pick up on. Whether
that’s destroying
the fuel tank room
with a set of mines,
shooting a guard on
the can, the epic
cliff dive scene, or
climbing up on the
small conveyor
belt…. There are
plenty of nods to
the past with this
game.
But
like I’ve said this
game has been out
there for awhile
now. It got released
for the Wii and ate
up by that fanbase.
But now that it’s
out for Xbox 360 and
PS3, it caters to a
different crowd and
it can do a few
things better. One
of the things it can
do better is
graphically. There’s
not a huge step up
from the Wii version
of the graphics for
Goldeneye
but
it’s a step up
enough that it’s
noticeable. The
other big difference
is being able to
play this game on
the Xbox 360
controller. I love
the Wii and what it
can do sbut with a
game like this you
have to play it on a
big bulky
controller… that’s
the way
Goldeneye
was played on the
Nintendo 64, so yes,
that’s the way it
needs to be played
in 2011.
There’s not a ton to
talk about this
game, it’s an update
of an update so to
speak with PS3 and
X360 owners finally
getting to bring
home this title to
play it on their
systems. It’s true
it doesn’t compare
well against
Call
of Duty
and other FPS games
that are out there
right now, but the
multiplayer modes
(Golden Gun!) and a
challenging enough
story make it a fun
game to pick up.
