All About Steve

Gary Unmarried is a TV show produced by ABC Studios that airs on CBS. Yes that’s weird. Not relevant to a review so much but everybody has to see that this might be slightly strange. Anyway, Jay Mohr is Gary. A newly divorced bachelor who balances his new life while having to maintain the connections to his old one. His wife Allison mostly despises him and his two kids love him, but aren’t completely settled into divorced life yet.

The series follows Gary through a variety of situations. Most of them are common situations of divorce but some are a little off the wall. In season one you follow Gary dating his daughter’s teacher, trying to teach his son to play golf, trying to get his ex-wife and her boyfriend to get married, and more.

Jay Mohr is very funny as Gary. This is his car to drive and he does that very well. He has great timing and unlike some of his other acting roles he’s likable as Gary and he’s the perfect man’s man, which is what Gary is and needs to be. Allison, Gary’s Ex-Wife, is played by Paula Marshall and she’s also great. I mean this as a complete complement, but she plays the role of the ex-wife very well.

The two kids on the show are great too. Ryan Malgarini is funny in the role of Gary’s son Tommy. He’s got some great facial expressions and that really goes for Kathryn Newton as Louise too. Even though she started the show in the second episode of the series while somebody else played Louise in the first episode. I hate it when TV shows do that, but obviously they felt like they needed to change it up based on a focus group somewhere… who knows.

Gary Unmarried is a great show. It’s nice to see a good sitcom work how it’s supposed to. It’s even better to see a good sitcom in a sea of terrible reality TV and awful teenage dramas. Hopefully we see at least four more seasons of this show. If you haven’t started watching Gary Unmarried yet, pick up this first season and you’ll like what you see.
