Family Guy
and Seth McFarland
only thought they
got the raw deal
with Fox. Before
Fox’s animation
domination the
network treated its
Sunday night prime
time lineup like
daytime television.
There was
The
Simpsons,
and nothing else
mattered even though
Futurama
and
Family Guy
also aired on
Sunday. But if NFL
football ran too
long
Futurama
and/or
Family Guy
didn’t even get
aired. Eventually
Fox canceled both
shows and fans were
outraged.
Family Guy
got revived by
Cartoon Network and
then brought back by
Fox so
Futurama
fans
pleaded to Fox for
them to bring the
show back too. First
were three
full-length
Futurama
movies that were
released directly to
video and then
Comedy Central came
in and saved the day
and signed up the
show for brand new
episodes. We’re in
year two of the
Futurama revival on
Blu-ray and DVD with
Futurama Volume 6
making it’s way to
home video with 13
episodes.
On
this set hilarious
plotlines ensue on
these 13 episodes.
There’s Fry becoming
a time cop like Tom
Cruise in
Minority Report.
There’s Leela
becoming obsessed
with capturing a
space whale in a
parody of
Moby Dick.
There’s even a
back-story on
Zoiberg and why the
Professor has kept
him around all these
years while being
his most incompetent
employee. Bender
also gets to be a
ghost and haunts the
rest of the staff at
Planet Express. All
13 episodes are
uproariously funny
with the trademark
humor that Groening
and the creators of
Futurama
have grown to be
appreciated by fans
for.
The
best parts of this
Blu-ray/DVD are the
episodes. Mainly
that’s because they
went back to what’s
made this show so
enduring in the
first place. With
Futurama,
part of the appeal
is Bender’s raunchy
humor and the
outlandish nerd
culture jokes that
the show has going
for it. But the main
reason why I’ve
always loved the
show is for its
surprisingly
enduring endings to
some of the
episodes. You’ll go
on this zany twenty
minute ride only to
be surprised by what
really happened or
what’s led to at the
end of the show.
That’s why I love
Futurama
and
Futurama 6
has plenty of those
moments.
On
Blu-ray this set has
plenty of hilarious
extras. It’s not as
deep of a set as
The
Simpsons,
but it’s still vast
for a 2-disc 13
episode collection.
There are episode
commentaries, a
Futurama
F.A.Q., deleted
scenes and a
featurette called
“The Anatomy of a
Scene” with
Proffesor Farnsworth
that’s hilarious in
only the way
Futurama
can be.
Futurama 6
is a great set on
Blu-ray and DVD.
Comedy Central and
Fox teaming up to
bring the show back
was amazing and Fox
releasing this set
on Blu-ray is
another win for fans
of the series. Pick
this up or
experience certain
doom says anchorman
Morbo.
