Years
ago when Tim Burton
was just getting
started into
filmmaking he made a
short called
Frankenweenie.
Starring a young
Daniel Stern,
Frankenweenie told
the story of a young
boy whose dog dies
and then is brought
back to life by the
young boy during a
lightening storm.
After years of
making amazing
movies, then taking
a serious approach
to stop motion
animation, Burton
decided to revisit
one of his early
projects and take
the stop motion
animation approach
to Frankenweenie.
In Frankenweenie,
young Victor
Frankenstein is an
intelligent boy who
loves science and
his dog Sparky. When
an accident happens
and Sparky gets hit
by a car, Victor
develops an
experiment to bring
his dog back to
life. When his
experiment works and
Sparky becomes a
full-blown
Frankenweenie,
things get strange
for Victor. With the
science fair coming
up, Victor gets to
deal with his
parents not
understanding what
he’s done, scared
townspeople, envious
kids, and the
mysteries of science
coming to life to
bite people who
don’t respect it
right on the back
side.
An outstanding voice
cast on
Frankenweenie takes
back seat to a
miraculous job of
stop motion
animation. There’s
been some quality
work done recently
in the field, but
nothing compares to
what Tim Burton and
crew have managed to
do with
Frankenweenie. The
style of the models,
settings and people,
is amazingly
original and the
movement of the
model’s are captured
perfectly. The
animation is done so
perfectly that it’s
easy to mistake this
movie for a computer
animated movie. All
of the models are
incredibly detailed,
especially Sparky
once he’s been
brought back to
life. The animation
is amazing, but
Burton’s story is
awesome and how
close it stays to
the original tale
speaks loads about
Burton’s 1984 short.
Frankenweenie on blu-ray
features a ton of
extra content. This
particular release
has a 3D Blu-ray
copy of the film, a
Blu-ray copy of the
film, a DVD copy and
a Digital Copy.
There are also a ton
of great
supplemental
features on the
release too
including Burton’s
original short, a
brand new short
called Sparky vs.
the Flying Saucers,
a comprehensive 30
minute documentary
on making the movie,
and a couple of
other goodies too.
All total with the
viewing options and
the bonus features,
Frankenweenie is a
great release.
Frankenweenie took
an old story and
made it new with
some of the best
stop-motion
animation work ever.
How detailed
everything is in
Frankenweenie is
something to marvel
at, but an excellent
story and some good
voice work completes
a great story. If
you’ve loved
Nightmare Before
Christmas,
or
Corpse Bride,
you’ll like
Frankenweenie even
more.
