The Short: Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is a great small-budget film. It avoids some clichés and has some great humor that makes it fun to watch.

Breathing a breath of fresh air into the vampire/werewolf/zombie flick, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night adds a humor dynamic to the humanistic horror genre. This movie’s captivating for its storytelling, but its fun to watch for its humor. Dylan Dog: Dead of Night isn’t a giant must-see movie, but it’s definitely something guys should check out who are sick of their girlfriends dragging them to Twilight movies.

Brandon Routh is Dylan Dog. Dog used to be a paranormal policeman of sorts. He was in charge of keeping the peace between humans, vampires, werewolves, zombies, and other non-human creatures. He was great at it too, until one of the villainous species killed his girlfriend, the love of his life. After that, he got his revenge and shut the door on that part of his life. Life has a way of catching back up with you though, and Dylan’s past caught up with him when a young woman hires him to investigate the murder of her father. She saw a werewolf flee the scene when she found the body. So Dylan and his zombiefied sidekick Marcus tag along with the young woman to figure out who murdered her father, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. They end up having to stop an all-out supernatural war between zombies, vampires, and werewolves.

The story is great. That’s what makes Dylan Dog: Dead of Night stand out. With this genre there have been so many clichés get touched on over and over in the last four years that it’s getting ridiculous. Out of all of the clichés that Dylan Dog could have touched on… really there were only one or two, and instead of making them crucial elements of the story… they only warrant a mention. And on top of the avoidance of clichés, there’s some great jokes, and several plot twists that make Dylan Dog: Dead of Night worth watching.

The weak spot with the movie isn’t with the story or even the direction because it looks great for what it is too. The weak spot with Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is the acting. Brandon Routh isn’t bad within Brandon Routh’s limitations but let’s just say Brandon Routh narrating anything should be avoided at all costs. Sam Huntington who plays Marcus is fairly weak at dialogue in the beginning of the film and really just period, but his comedic timing makes up for that. Anita Briem playing the female lead is surprisingly good through. Supporting cast spots are hit or miss with Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, some are great, some aren’t. It’s not a deal breaker, but there are a few rough acting spots with the movie.

We’re reviewing this movie on DVD this go around and despite it being an excellent feature; there are no extras to report. Different languages and subtitles, but no extras. That makes this film a bit of a bummer if you pick it up on DVD, but if you pick it up on Blu-ray you’ll enjoy it more anyway. Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is a great small-budget film. It avoids some clichés and has some great humor that makes it fun to watch.
