The Short: Diary of a Wimpy Kid might be hit or miss with some parents but it’s sure to hit with every 10-13 year olds out there.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is based on the book by Jeff Kinney. The book tells the story of Greg Hefley, a pretty standard preteen. He’s a middle child so he gets picked on by his older brother while being a brat to his younger brother at the same time. He also has the mentality that he’s cooler than he is. How he comes to the understanding that he’s not that cool and how he comes to terms with himself is what Diary of a Wimpy Kid is all about.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid chronicles Greg and his best friend Rowley’s first year in Middle School. The two go through all kinds of crazy mini-adventures learning some dos and don’ts along the while. There’s not a lot of story or synopsis that I can give you without diving too deep into the movie, just know that the book(s) were captured well with the movie even though not 100% true to the source material.

The problems with Diary of Wimpy Kid come more from the source material than with the movie itself. There’s not enough content to make a full-fledged movie ebb and flow the way it’s supposed to without being completely routine. The characters are ‘real’ but they’re not realistically so. Greg might be too much of a jerk to be our hero, his brother is over the top abusive, and his parents don’t feel like anything more than cameo spots because they’re limited to their roles in the movie.

The good news with Diary of a Wimpy Kid comes with it’s two main stars Rowley (Robert Capron) and Greg (Zachary Gordon) are actually pretty hilarious in the movie and feed off of each other extremely well to make some good laughs on screen.

The extras on Diary of a Wimpy Kid are good enough to keep the preteen crowd entertained. There are deleted scenes described as deleted diary pages and then there are Rowley’s lost Zoo-Wee-Mama cartoons that the kids will enjoy. There’s also a hilarious cartoon on the slip cover of the Blu-Ray that has some funny jokes from Rowley included. You also get a combo pack with the release that has a digital copy, a DVD, and the Blu-Ray disc.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid might be hit or miss with some parents but it’s sure to hit with every 10-13 year olds out there. The only thing I will say as a criticism for this is that it should have been adapted into a TV series instead of being made into a movie. It would have been perfect for a TV series, but the movie is more than good enough.
