The Short: Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a deep concept game. The graphics and audio are both stellar and the gameplay is great. I’m not a huge fan of all of the aspects of that gameplay but that doesn’t mean that other people out there won’t be. It’s a vast game that will take hours and hours to defeat and for fans of the original Deus Ex, they did a great job in honoring the original and moving what’s hopefully more titles forward.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the prequel to the famous game that was originally released in 2000 with a ton of rave reviews. Human revolution is brilliant in a ton of ways and pedestrian in a few. Regardless, it’s a ton of fun to play through and I’d recommend it to any avid gamer. Would I recommend it to the casual gamer? That I’m not seeing. Deus Ex: Human Revolution looks and sounds great. There are even areas where it plays great. But some weird control choices hinder it a bit.

We’ve seen this guy before, but we never saw him as a pure human. Adam Jensen runs security for Sarif Industries. He works directly under the company’s big boss David Sarif and he works alongside Megan Reed, an ex-love interest. Sarif Industries is a cutting edge company that’s leading the way in prosthetic science and even forced human evolution. The company is science at its peak. Countering that science are purists who think that it’s wrong to speed up human evolution and turns human into human machines. On the eve of David Sarif, Megan Reed, and the rest of the company getting ready for a huge presentation in Washington D.C., someone attacks the Sarif facility kills Reed and all of her team and leaves Jensen for dead. David Sarif and the other doctors at the company save Jensen’s life… by enhancing him and putting enhanced parts in him. After that Jensen keeps working for Sarif as security but he quickly uncovers a huge conspiracy and he goes on a global trek to discover who and what’s behind everything.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is not a first person shooter. It looks like it a bit, but it’s not. It’s a stealth/spy game. You can get through the game killing as many guards and enemies as you want but it’s actually easier if you don’t and better for your upgrades and the like if you don’t too. Sneaking and stealthing around is pretty fun and easy, and there’s always a couple of different routes to get things done. And for doing that sneaking and stealthing…. Everything is correct. The AI is decent, the cover system works really well, and the controls and things of that nature of doing a sneak attack lethal or non-lethal work great too. It’s when things go wrong and you have to do some combat that Deus Ex: Human Revolution struggles.

Combat in Deus Ex: Human Revolution isn’t that fun. The control system is incredibly weird and instead of being right/left trigger based, you’re supposed to aim/get into aiming mode by pressing down on the right control stick. This takes some time to get used to. That’s not the only thing that’s a little weird with the control scheme for Deus Ex though, the action button instead of being ‘a’ or ‘b’ like  a lot of games is ‘x’ and as weird as it is to say… that’s a bit off and it takes some time to get used to that.

I loved the stealth and sneaking aspect of Deus Ex, the combat isn’t great but after a level or two you’ll get the hang of it and start doing what you need to do. I even like the constant detective work where you find passwords, information, and more to uncover more and more about the conspiracy as you go along with it. The game is flat out gorgeous with graphics and the score is remarkable too. What I hate about games like this… is it might get a bit too advanced for itself. The hacking concept is ridiculous… It’s not even fun and really is it necessary? It’s just a bit much for this game.
