  Dante's Inferno

The Short: Dante actually had a video game in mind while writing the cantos. So everything worked out and fit really well with what he was trying to do. He also visualized male and female genetallia statues too. Read the press kit.

Dante’s Inferno is a lot like God of War. If you’ve ever played God of War you love the game and you love it’s combat. Dante feels a lot like that game but a less polished version of it. You go through the circles of hell and you fight specific demons for each circle using a giant axe as well as a holy cross. Sounds familiar huh? There’s nothing ground breaking with the controls or combat system of Dante’s Inferno but groundbreaking itself is the story behind the game.

This game doesn’t follow Dante’s Inferno. It uses it more as a premise. A guide if you will. You are set up as Dante, a crusader who grows tired of war. When he returns to his home he sees his house is destroyed and his wife Beatrice is dead in front of his house. He also sees Lucifer carrying off Beatrice’s soul to the depths of hell. He goes on a relentless pursuit of Lucifer and Beatrice through the gates of hell and through the circles of hell.

Each circle of hell is designed around its theme. Lust is very… lusty… with human genetalia decorating the level and nudity of the demons and characters throughout the level. Most of this is designed for a shock and awe factor. There’s even a monster that sprouts genetalia and flings it at you. If that’s not hell I’m not sure what is. Limbo is very dark and lonely, Greed is filled with Gold. Violence is well… violent. You get the idea. Each circle of hell is designed with its theme in mind. The levels are all really well designed even some of the cut scenes are nice.

The only things that are a bit annoying with Dante are the control scheme and the fixed camera. There are a few shaky moments with the camera when you’re climbing around on cliffs through hell but other than that it’s fine. Dante’s Inferno does offer some nice breaks from its control scheme with puzzles, mini games for absolving souls and some timing button presses, etc. So the combat style isn’t as good as it could be but it’s good enough. The camera can be extremely annoying- especially in the middle levels.

Dante’s Inferno is a good game. They used a great story for a game and they executed that story well. It’s not a perfect game but a sequel is set up and you get the feeling that a sequel could be twice as good as the original and the perfect game that the developers were out to design in the first place. It’s a good game to own on X360 for people who don’t get to play God of War too.
