Disneynature: Earth
and
Disneynature: Oceans,
Disneynature:
Crimson Wing
is a visually
impressive
documentary that
allows nature to
tell the story.
Unlike the other two
movies, The
Crimson Wing
follows only one
animal; The
Flamingo- and it’s a
straight to home
video release here
in the U.S.
I’ve
never known a ton
about flamingos. I
thought they were
boring animals whose
main purpose in
existence was
inspiration for lawn
ornaments. I was
wrong. It turns out
the flamingo has a
far more fascinating
background that I
could have imagined.
Crimson Wing
follows a heavy
populous of
flamingos in
Tanzania. Near an
active volcano that
makes the nearby
Lake Natron- a red
wonder filled with
natural chemicals.
Turns out, this is
the birthplace of
the flamingo. They
get their color from
eating the algae in
the lake and their
conception/birthplace
originates on an
island made of salt
that builds after
every rainy season
on Lake Natron.
Crimson
Wing
follows these
spectacular
creatures… starting
from them migrating
to the lake, then
leading to some umm…
‘natural’ moments,
and then to the
birth of some baby
flamingos. Then it
follows the baby
flamingos briefly,
making a migration
to get away from the
evil marabou stork
who eat the babies
and the fertilized
eggs, and then it
shows them traveling
back again.
The
coolest thing about
Crimson Wing
is learning about
this mysterious
bird… the common
person doesn’t know
how incredible these
creatures are….
Maybe I know more
about flamingos now
than I ever wanted
to, but that’s not a
bad thing. The other
cool thing about
Crimson Wing
is that it feels
like a movie… not
just a documentary…
we get to know these
animals- we get a
sense of a villain,
we get a sense of
who we’re rooting
for, etc. By
following one animal
for an hour and a
half we become more
attached to what
we’re seeing. We
don’t really see
that with
Oceans…
we just admire the
picture.
The
film is visually
impressive but not
as impressive as the
previous two
Disneynature films.
The story told with
the documentary
feels more complete
however with the
story only following
one animal. The
movie was narrated
well by Mariella
Frostrup and she
gives us all of the
information that we
need to know to go
along with some
cinematic beauty.
The sound quality of
the Blu-ray is
exceptional again…
though again… not as
impressive as
Oceans.
Crimson
Wing
is another great
movie from
Disneynature. The
extras aren’t really
worth a mention, but
the living menu is
present and it’s as
cool as it is on the
other releases. It’s
a different
documentary from the
previous two outings
but it also sets
Disneynature up for
some cool upcoming
films.
