Since
the U.S. adaptation
of
The
Office
caught on and Steve
Carrell made
uncomfortable comedy
popular there have
been tons of movies
and TV shows to
follow suit, some
good, some not so
good. From director
Miguel
Arteta and writer
Phil Johnston comes
Cedar
Rapids.
It’s a wonderfully
written and directed
movie starring Ed
Helms about the
world of debauchery
that goes on at
insurance
conferences.
The
uncomfortable comedy
of
Cedar
Rapids
centers around Tim
Lippe, he’s a young
insurance agent for
Brownstar Insurance.
He believes that
insurance agents are
heroes and due to
deaths of his
parents early in
life, he’s a bit of
a naïve fool. He’s
not a bad guy and
he’s not stupid,
he’s just naïve.
When Brownstar’s
star agent can’t go
to the annual
insurance conference
in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, Tim gets
chosen by his boss
to go to the
conference. After a
brief lesson of ins
and outs on the
conference, Tin
latches on to Dean
Ziegler, the one guy
he wasn’t supposed
to. Tim and Dean
form a crew of
insurance misfits
and they go on a
crazy adventure in
Cedar Rapids that
forces Tim to grow
up.
If
you love independent
comedies then you’ll
love
Cedar
Rapids.
I’ve always been a
fan of independent
comedies that don’t
try too hard to be
funny. They’re just
well made and well
written. That’s the
case with
Cedar
Rapids.
This is Phil
Johnston’s first
script that he’s
written that got
turned into a movie
and it’s a good one.
The pacing is decent
and the characters
are all very
lovable. That has to
do with the job that
Arteta did directing
too. These
characters are
identifiable and all
likeable. And with a
cast that includes
Anne Hache, John C.
Reilly, and Ed Helms
it’s perfect for the
type of movie that
this is.
As far as bonus
features go, Cedar
Rapids is decent.
There’s the typical
Fox Searchlight/Fox
Movie Channel
features, some
deleted scenes, and
some fun extra
content to go on the
side of that too.
Overall it’s a nice
package and it’ll be
a great pickup for
anyone who loved the
movie.
Cedar
Rapids
is a fun
light-hearted movie
that was well
written and
extremely funny. Ed
Helms is perfect in
the lead role here
and a great cast
surrounding him make
this enjoyable
throughout. This is
a great movie from
Fox Searchlight,
something they do
fairly often.
