After
all of the attention
that
Alvin
and the Chipmunks
got a couple of
years ago, you knew
there was going to
be a sequel. A
sequel never
happened, well it
kind of happened… in
the form of a
squeakquel. In
Alvin
and the Chipmunks:
The Squeakquel,
Alvin, Simon, and
Theodore are back
with another movie
and some new
friends.
In
the second Chipmunks
movie , Alvin,
Simon, and Theodore
get enrolled in high
school. With high
school the three
chipmunks interact
with other kids and
join separate
factions and cliques
until they’re at
odds with each
other. Not only are
they at odds with
each other, but
music industry
super-villain Ian
Hawke has discovered
three female
chipmunks, the
Chipettes, to
compete with the
Chipmunks. The boys
have to work out
their lives with
each other in high
school while dealing
with the competition
in a friendly way as
well as overcoming
Ian Hawke trying to
crush their hopes
and dreams again.
This
movie isn’t quite as
good as the first
movie. Sequels
rarely are. There
was a certain amount
of magic with the
first one that
wasn't really
expected. There are
a few problems with
Alvin
and the Chipmunks:
The Squeakquel.
In this movie, the
music selection
isn’t quite as good.
That, and the
Chipette’s muck up
the recipe of the
last movie, making
things slightly too
busy on screen.
That's not as big of
a knock on this
movie as it is a
compliment to the
previous movie. The
music supervision in
the last movie was
perfect. There was a
good balance with
predictable tracks
and original music.
With this movie,
it's all
predictable. The
Chipettes sing Katy
Perry and Beyonce.
It's
a logical choice for
mainstream
audiences, but it's
also redundant. If
parents weren't sick
of hearing "Single
Ladies" and "Hot 'n'
Cold" before this
movie, they will be
forever sick of them
because of this
movie. The story is
great, the movie is
funny, but the music
is slightly
disappointing and
that's one of the
biggest things you
think about when
thinking about Alvin
and Co.
As
for the bonus
features on this Blu-ray...
it’s loaded. Filled
with worth-while
content, you can
make photo albums,
watch music videos
with sing a-longs,
and skip directly to
music in the movie.
There are also a few
outstanding
featurettes that
talk about the
Chipettes' inception
in the cartoons, the
actor's voicing
their animated
counterparts, the
up-and-coming
artists featured in
the movie, and how
they make a scene
with really nothing
there before the
animators can come
in and do their
magic. The bonus
features with this
Blu-Ray are stacked
and it’s nice to see
that they didn’t
cash in without
adding some serious
incentive to buy
this Blu-Ray. With
the packaging you
also get a DVD and a
Digital Copy to go
with the purchase of
your Blu-Ray disc,
so it’s an even
greater value.
Alvin
and the Chipmunks:
The Squeakuel
wasn’t as good as
the first Chipmunks
movie but it will
frequent your
player. Kids love
the music in the
movie and they love
all of the action
and entertainment on
screen.
