The Short: Alpha Protocol isn’t a great game. RPG fans will find it fun because it’s a different type of game from what they’re used to playing and fans of shooters could find it fun because there’s some control of the storyline. It could have been better, but it winds up being just decent and not a must-play.

Obsidian is a developer known for making high quality RPGs. Unfortunately, Alpha Protocol doesn’t live up to the developer’s name and it doesn’t live up to its hype of being an ‘original’ RPG.  The game is too unbalanced at times, and too tedious at others. It wins points for having some action in it and for not being a typical RPG but that’s really about it.

In Alpha Protocol, you’re Michael Thorton, a rookie spy with a crack sense of humor and a government given ability to whoop some ass.  You guide Michael through the world of espionage talking to people, getting answers, and shooting things up. It really does sound more fun than it is unfortunately.

The best part about this game is its story. Normally in an RPG game you get to be a mythical ninja or some other weird role. In this game, you get to take on the role of a spy. You make choices as your character that affects the progress of the game and they’re cool decisions to get to make. You choose how you talk to people, or whether you just say screw it and kill them. The conversations are fun and unique on Thorton’s end, unfortunately- they’re not fun and unique with the other characters. They’re too boring and plain and they really are too stereotypical to belong in this game. It’s a shame that it had to be that way, but it is what it is.

Fighting enemies in this game isn’t a bad system surprisingly. It doesn’t happen enough, and it’s too repetitive, but it’s a decent system that most will find engaging. Being able to make decisions to drive the story is awesome; fighting bosses and your enemies is a close second.

The biggest downside of this game is all of the email messages. There’s just too many. It’s too big of a part of the game. It doesn’t fit in with the rest of the game. Most of all, when I’m playing a game I’m doing it to get away from the monotony of work. I don’t want to go home and check a different email that’s not significant and is a shortcut in a game. Boo to emails in games. Somebody needs to tell developers this.
