All About Steve

Air Bud: Golden Receiver was the begining of the buddies for Disney. It was the follow-up movie to Air Bud. As with most things, it wasn’t as good as the original but it was good enough.

The story follows Josh Framm and his dog Buddy again. This time, Josh’s mom starts dating again and Josh is in the awkward situation that lots of kids have been through, especially when she finds a serious boyfriend in Patrick Sullivan. Josh doesn’t like the new boyfriend and then the jealousy and teenage drama begin. Of course that’s the underlying ‘human’ story behind Air Bud: Golden Receiver. The real story has to do with Bud. When Tom decides he needs to get away from his mom dating he joins the football team. Bud follows Tom around everywhere and it’s soon learned that he’s pretty good at football too. He plays, the team wins, everyone is happy at the end because Bud brought them all together.  That’s Air Bud: Golden Receiver in a nutshell.

The movie is good enough. It took the characters in Air Bud and developed them and managed to tell a decent story.  The best part of the movie though was the fact that Robert Costanzo was in the movie as Coach Fanelli. He made the movie. If you’ve seen City Slickers in the last four years you know Costanzo as the other dad at career day with Billy Crystal. He didn’t do any cursing in this movie, but he always had a sandwich in his hand and he brought a little comedy to a movie that was otherwise very dry.

This DVD’s special features are actually what this release is all about. The Buddies provide a commentary like play by play that the little ones will like. That play by play and a dog whistle make this release a little obnoxious for parents but a lot of fun for the kids and that’s where it’s at.

Air Bud : Golden Receiver couldn’t have been very much better than it was in the first place, but the addition of a couple of key bonus features make this 10th Anniversary Edition very watchable. The kids will love this one, just like all of the other Buddy movies and that’s what it’s about.
