The Short: If you see the movie, (and it rocks by the way) and you haven’t had enough Thor, you can smash some frost giants with a hammer. It’ll fill a need.

Thor: God of Thunder struggles. It’s not altogether awful, but it definitely struggles. It struggles with bad voice work. It struggles with some poor graphics work in and out of cut-scenes. It struggles with the camera problems. And it also struggles with control, frame-rate, and concept. It altogether struggles.

The game does not follow the plot of the movie. So there are no spoilers here. Thor is the Prince of Asgard and when his realm gets attacked by the frost giants and they slay his friend Sif. Thor gets angry and then manipulated by Loki into bringing about the apocalypse and the end of the nine worlds while trying to take the frost giants out of existence. Thor and his trusty hammer go on a slug fest to bring on the end of the frost giants and later save all the realms from Armageddon.

As noted before, Thor has plenty of struggles, but I’d be lying if I didn’t enjoy playing it to some extent. There are several parts of the game that are incredibly frustrating. But the story was well written and it’s fun to follow. And while the control scheme has its fair share of problems, that same control scheme also makes this game a huge challenge. Because you’re unable to duck and dodge away from every enemy attack you have to incorporate a little strategy into what you’re doing. The camera is also a big problem. It’s incredibly stubborn and it routinely takes important things out of the screen. BUT it also captures the environment that Thor’s in very well and gives it a God of War type look.

Thor: God of Thunder has its problems. It’s not worth a full price tag. I’ll scream that at somebody emphatically. But if it’s in a bargain bin or you can pick it up used then it’s worth a look. Plus if you see the movie, (and it rocks by the way) and you haven’t had enough Thor, you can smash some frost giants with a hammer. It’ll fill a need.
