Disney' 50th
Animated film and
supposedly last
based on a fairy
tale has arrived on
Blu-ray and DVD.
Pixar films
excluded, if you
look at Disney's
history of animated
features you'll
notice that they
roll off a few
mediocre pictures
and then they get on
a hot streak and
roll off on a hot
streak of 4 or 5
films. After
The
Princess and the
Frog,
this 50th feature
appears to be caught
in one of those hot
streaks of quality
films. It's on par
with the company's
last outing and if
you're looking at
the company's 3D
animated films
(again Pixar work
excluded) it's
easily the best one
that's been made.
Tangled
comes from the pages
of Rapunzel. The
story here goes that
Rapunzel's hair has
magical powers that
have the power to
heal and reverse
age. Due to this,
her controlling
mother keeps her
locked up in a tower
away from the rest
of the world,
grounded for life.
When a degenerate
named Flynn Rider
stumbles into the
tower looking for a
hideout, he's
ambushed by Rapunzel
and forced to take
her out of the tower
on an adventure to
the real world. In
the movie you get to
follow Rapunzel and
Flynn on their
venture to escape
the law chasing the
degenerate Rider and
Rapunzel's mother
trying to put her
back in the tower.
Everything about
this particular
movie is fantastic.
The story telling
with this 50th
adventure doesn't
disappoint save for
a few dull moments
in the middle and
the writing was
stellar overall. Out
of the past ten
movies, Tangled is
easily the funniest
that's been made.
That's due to strong
storytelling, the
company's best
animated 3D work to
date, and some very
funny voice work
done by Mandy Moore
(Rapunzel) and
Zachary Levi (Flynn
Rider.) Moore has
always had a voice
quirky and perfect
for comedy, but Levi
is hilarious here as
Rider. There's
really not much else
to say about Levi,
he's perfect and
hilarious here.
Everyone will fall
in love with the
main characters in
Tangled,
but the supporting
cast will also earn
plenty of laughs.
Pascal the chameleon
provides some comic
relief when the
story is a little
dull and Maximus the
horse is hilarious
as Flynn's
opposition. The main
villain here,
Rapunzel's mom,
Mother Gothel is
also funny... but
more to the adult
crowd than the
younger audience.
Mother Gothel might
be the most
realistic mom ever
brought to life by
the company...
especially early in
the movie and to the
cynical adult crowd.
Also
extraordinary with
this movie is the
music. It's not as
great as
The
Princess and the
Frog.
It's not a genre
influenced or
specific collection
here.
If
you could choose a
genre, I would
suppose it would be
pop or maybe
showtunes, but it's
pretty diverse.
Pigeon-holing aside
though, there's a
very solid
collection of 4 or 5
songs here that are
great.
As
noted before there
are a few dull
moments towards the
beginning of the
movie, but they're
necessary to further
the story. The two
stars here Rapunzel
and Flynn get most
of the attention
here as they should,
but you also would
have liked to get
the supporting
characters Pacal and
Maximus a little
more screen time.
That's just
nit-picking though,
Tangled
is a fabulous movie
that anyone can
enjoy.
For
bonus features,
Disney doesn't
disappoint with
Tangled.
There's a cool
feature on the
making of the movie
and adapting the
fairy tale to the
screen. There's also
three deleted
scenes, extended
songs, and my
personal favorite...
marketing trailers
and teasers themed
with different
elements to make
them more humorous
than the standard
trailer and teaser.
Another
cool feature
included is a look
at the 50 animated
Disney films that
have been made over
the years. You would
have liked to have
seen an animated
short of some kind
bundled with this
movie, but other
than that the bonus
content is great.
For
its 50th animated
feature, Disney
pulled out all of
the stops for
Tangled.
Moore and Levi were
perfect to lead the
way here on a very
funny script for a
path. That and
plenty of Disney
magic make this a
fun movie. To cut it
short, if you're
looking for a good
animated feature you
can't go wrong with
this. It's Disney's
50th animated
feature. Of course
it's going to be
good.
