Martin Scorsese’s
latest film,
Shutter Island
comes from a Dennis
Lehane book. The
story combined with
Scorsese’s vision
for the story
provide an intense
psychological thrill
ride that will have
you on the tip of
your wits until the
end.
Leonardo DiCaprio
takes the lead in
another Scorsese
picture. He plays
U.S. Marshall Teddy
Daniels, who’s been
assigned to
investigate an
escaped inmate at
Shutter Island, a
psychological ward
for the criminally
insane.
Teddy
and his partner
Chuck Aule (Mark
Ruffalo) ship off to
the island and are
greeted with uneasy
cooperation by the
staff and hostility
by some of the
patients. You follow
Teddy and Chuck on
the trail of the
missing inmate as
they try to find out
where she went and
what’s really going
on at Shutter
Island.
The book that this
movie is based on is
an intense thriller
and Scorsese’s
vision for it
couldn’t have been
better. The movie
takes place in the
50’s and its sleek
and stylish. The
famous director
captured the mood
and the tone of the
period perfectly,
something that he’s
always been amazing
at. Between an
amazing script,
DiCaprio’s
outstanding
performance, and
some of the work
that Scorsese did
producing tone and
setting that pace
for the movie- it’s
really something
that you’ve got to
watch- maybe even
twice.
The biggest
disappointment with
this Blu-Ray are its
lack of bonus
features. There are
two featurettes
about the making of
the movie, and they
are both well made
with plenty of
insight, but it
would have been cool
to document making
the movie- not just
get the interviews
after it was made.
If
you’ve read the book
then you know what
the movie’s about,
but just like how it
was marketed- it’s
better to come in
not knowing a lot
about the film. What
I can tell you is
this- it looks
great, DiCaprio did
a great job in the
lead role, Ruffalo
is underrated in his
role, the supporting
actors are all high
profile guys like
Ben Kingsley, and
you won’t know
what’s really going
on until the end.
