The Short: The recreation of Goldeneye was cool… it just wasn’t as cool as the original version of the game. Let’s rephrase that- it’s not as cool as the original version of the game in its time.

Activision re-upped and recreated Goldeneye for the Wii. The biggest question that you can ask is- ‘Did they do a good job?’ If you’re looking at the paltry selection of first person shooter games on the Wii and that this will immediately become one of the elite game in the genre for the system then it’s both a knock and a compliment. If you compare it against similar first person shooters like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Halo without equating that this is for Nintendo then it fails in a variety of ways. That said, this is the recreation of a beloved game and it does some things very well. I had a sizable amount of fun with Goldeneye- there were some small disappointments from what I expected, but overall it was a good experience.

This redone/recreated version of Goldeneye doesn’t resemble the original story at all. Instead of Pierce Brosnan- Daniel Craig fills out the roll of Bond and the characters, story, and environment around the Ian Flemming version of Bond has been recreated to come from that version of Bond. I’ll miss Pierce Brosnan’s blocky face and the two red heads with the cartoonish guns and grins, but other than that – you can’t really knock the recreation of the story. That’s a definite perk to Goldeneye. The other perk is the graphic work that they did for this game on a console that’s somewhat limited. It looks fantastic and it’s one of the more rich-looking games you’ll see on higher resolution TVs with the Wii. The other strong bonus you can throw out with Goldeneye is it’s easily the best multiplayer FPS experience on the Wii and one of the more fun multi-player experiences PERIOD that you’ll have on the Wii.

That’s all great stuff with Goldeneye and judging it just for being on Wii. But look… most people who are serious about gaming in 2010 that own a Wii also own something else…. And if you’re comparing this game to what it could have been on one of the other systems or what it’s like compared to other FPS available then this one comes up short. The frame-rate slips down and bogs when too much is going on the screen. Controlling with the Wii remote and using that for shooting is fun, but it’s not really tight enough no matter how you adjust your settings. The same can be said for using the classic controller. When you use the control and you play a FPS game with it… it just doesn’t feel right. It’s too little and there’s no trigger button to shoot with. So when you compare Goldeneye for the Wii against other FPS games for the Wii then it’s a huge success. When you compare Goldeneye as a first person shooting game against other games on different consoles then this definitely comes up short. It’s still fun, but that’s something to think about.

The recreation of Goldeneye was cool… it just wasn’t as cool as the original version of the game. Let’s rephrase that- it’s not as cool as the original version of the game in its time. There’s no problem with the graphics, the sound, or the story- it’s all about controls and technique- and that’s more the systems fault than it is the games. It’s a tough call but if I had a Wii or I loved the original Goldeneye then I’d definitely pick this up- but more than likely if I had an old Nintendo 64 and a copy of the game around then I’d pop that in and play it.
