If
only every married
couple in need of
counseling and
repair could get
launched into the
witness relocation
program and move to
Wyoming for a couple
of weeks the
country's divorce
rate would be a lot
lower. It's just not
meant to be though.
Hugh
Grant and Sarah
Jessica Parker star
in
Did
You Hear About the
Morgans?
as Meryl and Paul
Morgan. When they
witness a murder in
New York the FBI
puts them into the
witness relocation
program and they are
put in custody of a
Marshall in the
small town of Ray,
Wyoming. There's
only one catch. When
they were in New
York, the couple was
separated and ready
to go their own ways
for good. In the
witness relocation
program they have to
live together and
they end up
resolving some of
their differences.
The movie captures
some things very
well. Even though
the movie wasn't
shot in Wyoming, it
was shot in New
Mexico, it does look
like Wyoming. Most
of the small towns
with a couple of
hundred people in
them look exactly
like Ray is
portrayed in the
movie. The movie
also portrays
Wyoming very well in
a cultural
standpoint. There
aren't very many
Republicans.
EVERYONE in small
towns leaves their
keys in their cars.
You have to drive 45
minutes to get to a
bigger town for
supplies. There's
usually only one
doctor or one
doctor's office per
town. They got
several things right
in terms of what
Wyoming is really
like. That doesn't
mean I'm not enraged
that they chose to
film in New Mexico
instead of Wyoming
because there are
several towns that
would have been just
fine. If I weren't
from Wyoming I
wouldn't care, but I
am so I do.
This movie is
ultimately about the
Morgans. It's a Hugh
Grant movie that's a
romantic comedy so
it's got the same
kind of humor that
he's been doing on
screen for the past
decade. He's a
British guy who
turns into an
awkward British guy
in overly-American
situations. It's
something that suits
him very well and
something that's
funny no matter how
many times you see
it.
Did
You Hear About the
Morgans
isn't an overly
funny romantic
comedy. It's just
decent. Hugh Grant
and Sarah Jessica
Parker portray New
Yorkers out of their
element very well.
They depict
small-town life in
Wyoming very well
and even though it's
not the funniest
movie ever it ends
up being a good
date-night movie.
