The Short: Amazing digital effects and some non-stop action make 2012 an awesome movie despite a slow build.

There has been an insane amount of natural disasters recently. Most notably in Haiti and Chile. Thousands of people have tragically died and countless more have lost their homes and everything they own.  All of this happened over the past few months and there’s been a lot of speculation to whether or not these earthquakes are linked together or linked with the tremendous amount of seismic activity going on in Yellowstone National Park this year. They’re not linked according to most experts but it gets everyone thinking. Toss in director Roland Emmerich’s latest disaster movie "2012" and maybe people get thinking even more. This movie’s home entertainment release date has some odd timing with the occurrences of all of these disasters but it’s pretty hard to deny that "2012" is a fast-paced action flick with some tremendous effects. That and a solid plot that make it Emmerich’s second best film.

Why is the world going to end in 2012? Strictly because the Mayan’s predicted it? No. But the movie does mention the Mayans a few times and there’s a minor sub-plot featuring a monk and his family. I’ll let you discover the science behind why the world’s ending in 2012 for yourself because that’s half the fun. But what you need to know is this. John Cusack plays Jackson Curtis and he’s a madman that has to travel with his family around the world to survive when California sinks in to the Pacific and later when Yellowstone’s volcano’s erupt, and the world pretty much comes to an end as we know it. The other central character is Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a scientist who helps discover what’s going on with the world before it happens and leads the scientific team to ensure the continuance of the human race and others.

Both storylines and even the sub-plots are set up well but they’re set up at a very boring pace. The first 45 minutes of "2012" are almost brutal. There isn’t a whole lot of action, it’s hard to connect with a few of the minor characters, and there’s not enough going on. It really is the calm before the storm. But about 45 minutes into the movie, the action starts and it doesn’t stop. It seems like there’s crazy scene after crazy scene until the climax of the movie. If you can make it through the first 45 minutes, you won’t be disappointed with the rest of the movie.

There’s a two-disc special edition Blu-Ray that features a digital copy and an insane amount of bonus features and if you’re a huge fan of the movie that’s the way to go. This single-disc edition Blu-Ray is a great addition to your Blu-ray library for the movie itself and the few bonus features that are on the disc. Those bonus features include a somewhat weird alternate ending, a cool picture and picture feature with Roland Emmerich and Sony’s awesome Movie IQ and a good commentary track. This movie looks amazing on Blu-ray. The pictures are stunning. Between a great transfer and some of the best digital effects that I’ve ever seen on Blu-ray this is a great disc to pop in and show off the amazing power of the format. If you’re hooked up with home stereo too, the 5.1 DTS-HD audio is booming.

2012 was a movie I dreaded seeing for quite some time. I’m not a huge fan of movies about the end of the world. But for how serious a subject it is 2012 was somewhat light. You see devastation and disaster and yes, some death- but you don’t see it up close or in a horrific matter and that makes it a light and fun action-packed movie that’s easy to enjoy on the amazing format that is Blu-ray.

Music: The soundtrack to the movie is what is. The score is awesome with some great compositions. There are three original songs featured on the soundtrack but not used during the movie including an original song from Adam Lambert that’s not terrible. The outstanding song by Richard Patrick and Filter called Fades like a Photograph is the bright spot on the album.
