12 Rounds is not a good movie. It’s not a horrible movie, but it’s not a good movie either. John Cena is awesome through the whole thing and he’s surprisingly not a bad actor. The rest of the cast in the movie however is borderline terrible. There are some big problems with actual acting in this movie and there are some big issues with the script too… some terrible moments in this movie where emotion is trying to be created and there’s really no emotion to create. 12 Rounds doesn’t work on those two levels.

12 Rounds is set up like this. Cena is a beat cop by the name of Danny Fisher. Him and his partner Hank Carver (Brian White) are on their beat trying to help the feds catch one the world’s most wanted men- Miles Jackson- who is in New Orleans doing some arms dealing and some other bad juju. Fisher spots Jackson and his girlfriend at a stop light and chases the two down until unfortunately, Jackson’s girlfriend gets ran over and dies. Jackson then vows revenge against Fisher on the spot to take away what he loves most, just like he claims Fisher did to him. A year later Jackson escapes from prison, kidnaps his foe’s girlfriend Molly (played by Ashley Scott) and forces Fisher into twelve rounds of his sick game. From there Cena franticly moves around New Orleans to complete tasks for Jackson so he won’t kill Molly.

The biggest problem with 12 Rounds is the cast, Miles Jackson, played by Aidan Gillen is the biggest under exaggeration of a villain that I’ve ever seen. He’s not scary. Irishmen aren’t scary. We’re not. We’re tough as hell but not really that scary. You want a scary villain? Russia or Austria is where you need to go. Those guys can be scary. The other big knocks aren’t on the casting, but on the acting... Steve Harris plays Special Agent George Aiken and while he’s usually pretty good, he wasn’t right for that part. We’ll just say sarcasm isn’t his strong point. Other actors in the movie are downright filthy in places too.

A better script and a better cast would have done a ton for 12 Rounds. John Cena proved that he’s a capable lead man, but as a product 12 Rounds falls flat.
