The Short: The problem with 007 Blood Stone isn’t just how light it is- with the play time of five hours with no reason to come back to it and a poor multi-player showing- It’s that it’s not Goldeneye.

It’s a secret rule that when one licensed games come out- they have to come out across all of the systems and not just one. With the recent re-up for Goldeneye on the Wii and the restrictions for using that due to Nintendo’s licensing of the original game for Nintendo 64, the game can’t be released on X360 and PS3. Enter 007 Blood Stone as a unique and new adventure created exclusively for release as a video game- it’s not based on a movie. So while Nintendo enthusiasts get the rerelease and redone version of Goldeneye, X360 and PS3 owners get relegated to a third person Bond game that’s not nearly as fun as Goldeneye, but not altogether disappointing.

In this Bond game you’re the Daniel Craig version of the character with the Ian Flemming influence for the game. The story is interesting enough with you and Bond going through a variety of locales and facing a variety of terrorists through Europe and Asia trying to pull off some nasty stuff with bio-chemicals. So you take Bond through a assortment of missions to figure out who’s behind the whole thing until you do, that’s usually how it works isn’t it?

The game is a third-person shooting game and it handles like a dream. From moving around in cover to firing off a quick shot, it handles fantastically. There’s really not a problem with this game with sound, visuals, controls, or story. The multi-player is weak though and the single-player campaign is about 5 hours with very little replayability to it.

Bizzare Creations is the developer of this game and for a third-shooting game they did a fantastic job. Some of the levels look like each other but others are textured beautifully and provide some great visuals. It’s also worth a note that while playing through the entire story I might have experienced a camera glitch once. They did a great job with presenting a good product. The problem with this game isn’t that Bizarre did a bad job with the Bond license- the problem is more out of their control.

The problem with 007 Blood Stone isn’t just how light it is- with the play time of five hours with no reason to come back to it and a poor multi-player showing- It’s that it’s not Goldeneye. For once Nintendo enthusiasts get an awesome shooting game and everyone else gets left wanting. It doesn’t happen a lot. 007 Blood Stone is really too light to be a good consolation prize but it’s something to look into down the line if you need something to play. It was a fun but short experience- something James Bond doesn’t get a lot… ZING!

007 Blood Stone comes to the Nintendo DS just like it’s available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The DS version of the game is scaled down significantly with graphics and what the portable system is capable of doing, but overall it’s a fun portable experience.

Blood Stone is an original James Bond story told exclusively for this set of video games. The game was written by Bruce Feirstein and the story is great for a Bond/videogame story- the DS version isn’t bad. You’re getting the soundtrack and the voice work transferred over to the DS and although the cut scene movies are a little blocky and the audio quality isn’t the greatest, it works good enough and it’s easy to follow the story with the content that’s provided, and that’s what matters.

As far as the graphics and gameplay goes, the graphics aren’t terrible for a DS game. There are some nice effects and coloring early on in the game with the boat levels and although some things are fairly blocky up close- the far away textures look outstanding. The gameplay of the game is similar to what we’ve seen out of some other shooting games for the DS. You choose an option with a touch screen interface and a button does one of the three things. It’s not the best system there is but it works. The touch screen also doubles for a right stick/ so you aim and do some controls with your touch screen. Again- it’s not the best system that’s out there but it’s not terrible- it works.

With the DS version of any game there are limits on its capabilities, but the end product of the game is simple- was it fun? 007 Blood Stone was fun. It had its problems, but it had its perks too. Don’t expect to be blown away by this experience- but you can expect to get some portable fun on the go.
