Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back in Town" blared
through the house speakers of the Summit Music Hall this past Friday
night in Denver as the crowd's anticipation grew for JThe Darkness.
Strutting onstage and dressed in a zebra-striped jumpsuit, Hawkins and
company exploded into "Every Inch Of You," the first track from their
latest release, Hot Cakes.
Despite a lengthy time off, the band didn't miss a beat. They hit on new
songs such as "Nothin's Gonna Stop Us" and "She Just a Girl, Eddie" as
well as the older songs like "Black Shuck" and "Get Your Hands Off My
Woman."
Frontman Justin Hawkins has an endless amount of
swagger. The night seemed to be a celebration of the classic glam rock
of the past. He made sure to punctuate the end of each song with a jump,
leap, or scissor kick from the drum riser. Guitar solos and the
showmanship from Hawkins made it a memorable evening. The best moment to
me though, was just before the end of the show. Hawkins teased the crowd
with a few bluesy notes on his guitar, followed by breaking into their
biggest hit, "I Believe in a Thing Called Love." After a brief pause as
the crowd cheered, the encore featured a heavy metal version of the
Radiohead track, "Street Spirit" along with the classic "Love On the
Rocks With No Ice." During the finale, Justin walked around the crowd on
a guys shoulders. The Darkness still puts on a hell of a show. They may
have been gone for seven years but they're back and better than ever.
