Dogs Eating Dogs EP

After recording Neighborhoods, blink-182 still had some issues. According to the band, everyone was still walking on eggshells while make the record and while out promoting it at first. As it turns out, they didn’t even record Neighborhoods in the same room. They all recorded their parts in different places and then mixed everything together. Now independent, everyone is saying and doing the right things and they all seem to be friends again. After leaving the Universal umbrella, blink-182 has released their first independent release since Cheshire Cat. The Dogs Eating Dogs EP features one holiday song and four other blink songs that has some interesting qualities.

More so than Neighborhoods, this EP takes the Angels and Airwaves and +44 things that Delonge, Hoppus, and Barker did and mixes them perfectly. Some of the songs take Delonge’s big, sweeping guitars and embellishes them with his spacey vocals. The other songs take Hoppus’ habit of creating chaotic alternative punk and speed through until the end only breaking for Barker to beat the hell out of the drums or for Hoppus and Delonge to share some outstanding harmony parts.

The lone critique with this EP is that blink-182 is an album band. Fans love Enema of the State, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, Dude Ranch, and their self-titled album for 85-100% of those songs, not just a couple. Releasing an EP is something that everybody does, but I don’t think it’s something that high profile bands that have been around for a decade plus should do.

I liked Neighborhoods. I wasn’t floored by how amazing it was, but I definitely liked it. I was like a lot of other people and I was so happy to have another blink record I didn’t care too much as long as it sounded like blink. Now, in retrospect you can hear the things that they’ve mentioned recently about taking precautions because the alliance was so fragile at that point. This EP sounds like they’ve opened things up and it should have everyone excited for the future of blink again.
