Green Day

Stepping away from the big, dramatic theme records that they made with 21st Century Breakdown and American Idiot, Green Day is back with a different kind of themed record; a trilogy. The first one of the three albums to be released over the next few months, Uno! is out now. Dos!, and Tre! are coming soon. If the other two albums even come close to Uno! in quality, then Green Day fans are in for an amazing six months.

Uno! is a brilliant. By teaming back up with Rob Cavallo, the band made a set with Uno! that’s most comparable to their work in the 90’s. This material sounds like a record that could be nestled in between Dookie, Insomniac, and Nimrod. There’s more to it than that though. There are tons of solos and huge guitar parts for a Green Day record. There are also all of these updated 60’s pop and rock sounding sections throughout the album. If it weren’t for the roughly 764 f-bombs littered throughout the album you could visualize the band playing all of this material on black and white TVs decades ago. Maybe that’s a stretch, but maybe more than any other Green Day record so far, Uno! borrows from the past.

Uno! isn’t as ambitious with its content as Green Day’s last album, but that doesn’t matter. Musically it stands out as this raucous mash-up of old-school pop/rock, 90’s era Green Day, and yes, modern Green Day. If Dos! And Tre! Are half as good as Uno! then we’re in for something special.
