Although I am a huge fan of the band Saliva, I’m not a big fan of this new record “Blood Stained Love Story.” It’s not that it’s all bad, it’s just that there are a lot of weak moments on this disc that bring the whole thing down. This album might be the beginning of the end for a band that so many people have loved for so long.
Take into account 2002’s “Back into Your System,” that album was filled with great songs. Songs that had never been done before and songs that you couldn’t believe were being done by Saliva at the time. “Weight of the World” was a great song off that record, as was the title track “Back Into Your System,” and the brooding single from that album “Always.” But where that album was great this one failed. Those songs were passionate, they were heartfelt, and these songs might try to do, but that they come up short. There was a major growth factor for the band in 2002, but in 2007 after they’ve been around for a decade or so it’s hard to grow.
The biggest problem with this new album though is pretty simple. They went back to their roots, way back to their roots into the “Click Click Boom” and “Your Disease” phase of their careers. Where they still had a lot of rap incorporated into their sound and it seemed that there was a lot of style over substance going on. There is one bright spot on this album, track 2 “Broken Sunday” is one of the best songs they have written, but other than that there’s not a lot here that hasn’t been done before and done better.
Saliva takes a big step backwards with “Blood Stained Love Story,” but let’s hope they recover to old form. This band can produce great albums with lots of hits. It just didn’t happen this time around.
