From Seattle, PRETTY AWKWARD has a sound that fits their name. They don’t fit anywhere perfectly but they fit well into their own niche nicely. PRETTY AWKWARD’s sound resides somewhere between Tom Petty, The Maine, and lovelytheband. Their music has a vibe akin to the Petty era in music and the vocal from Austin Held paired with the production assists serve that well. The guitars are a little more similar to The Maine, they incorporate some rustic tones to them, but they do it in a modern way. The band also makes light use of some electronic elements but not in a way that it detracts from the more rustic nature of their sound. On the band’s new single “Misfits”, and on the other two songs they’ve released so far, they write strong melodies. They’ll stick in your head and stay there so whether you’re listening for the third time or the hundredth time – you’ll be able to sing along.
“Misfits” is kind of the perfect anthem for this band. It’s like their own personal sonic autobiography and the sound matches the lyric message pretty much on point. Frontman Austin Held sings, “We are misfits forever young and reckless, throw ‘em up for the lost and the rejected. With our broken arms we will carry you because we are misfits forever young and reckless” – and it’s a message that can resonate to anybody who doesn’t feel like they can’t fit in or won’t quit on something they’ve been chasing for too long. The chorus is a personal favorite part but It seems only appropriate that towards the end of the song the band goes into some la la las – because what the hell else does a band in 2020 do that would be completely weird but then completely work at the same time. Yeah, that. PRETTY AWKWARD has a sound that’s lovably odd and “Misfits” showcases that.
PRETTY AWKWARD’s “Misfits” is a terrific song that’s easy to like easy to sing along to. Plus, they’re just easy dudes to root for. PRETTY AWKWARD fits in well with people who don’t fit in and this song is definitely the anthem for that.
