Personally, I’m not always up for female vocalists, especially ones with powerful voices. The radio and mainstream tend to overplay them to the point of exhaustion. Here's the thing about Bishop Briggs though, it’s easy to get excited about what she does. She seems and sounds authentic and there's something intimidating about her that her music that much more appealing. Her album Church of Scars was a good listen, but her latest release CHAMPION is insanely good.
CHAMPION is good for several reasons but of course, it starts with Briggs' vocal. She’s amazing. You can throw out comparisons between this person and that person, but it doesn’t give her the credit she deserves. Her music is her own thing, it’s like an edgier version of whoever you can compare her to. Her voice is soulful and powerful and with the songs here that are heavy on bass riffs - her voice is the perfect instrument to drive home a point. CHAMPION is great all over. From start to finish, there’s not a bad song. Favorites include the title track, "I STILL LOVE YOU", and "LONELY" but the whole album is well worth a listen.
Bishop Briggs' sophomore release is pretty damn remarkable. At some point the mainstream will pick up on one of these songs and Briggs’ music can get the attention it deserves, even if it drives us nuts. For now, enjoy listening to this album for the first 20-50 times before moving onto something else.
