Matt Maeson

Bank On The Funeral

There’s nobody quite like Matt Maeson. On first listen to any of Maeson’s music you’d think he was from the UK in some area, but he’s from Virginia and his vocal has more of gritty Southern vibe going on. Then, there’s his music – you can hear his roots in gospel music in nearly everything he does, but at the same time he has a lot of issues with self-loathing that come to the forefront in his music contrasting that gospel sound beautifully. On Maeson’s debut LP, Bank On The Funeral you can hear that gritty gospel sound with self-loathing all over the album. “Cringe”, “Go Easy”, “Hallucinogenics” “Tribulation” and “Beggar’s Song” are all solid examples of Maeson’s style and they’re all tremendous.

Maeson’s songwriting is advanced well beyond his years. Yeah, melody wise it’s crazy. It’s kind of like a revamped Bob Dylan. His melodies are different than most and when he leads up to them, he gives lots of room for production to amplify the affect they have. Musically, Maeson is great, but his lyrics are really where he shines. There’s a dark element to his vocals that are always there but there’s always semblances of hope too. He can sing a song about feeling like he’s trash but there are clear elements where he’s expressing how he wants to do better. Then he can sing about being a toxic relationship but then expressing his drive not to run back to it when it’s over.

Bank On The Funeral is a great record and what should be the unofficial start to an amazing career for Maeson. This record is 12 songs deep and it’s as lyrically deep as it is sonically pleasing.
