Simple Creatures

Strange Love EP
Artwork

Simple Creatures took us by surprise a couple of months ago. The project is a new duo from blink-182's Mark Hoppus and All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth and it features melody in the style that both songwriters have gone to in the past but with plenty of electronics and synths going on in the background. They just released their debut EP Strange Love and it's a decent listen.

The six songs on this EP are interesting. In terms of melody, "Drug", "Adrenaline" and "Lucy" belong in Gaskarth's wheelhouse slightly more than Hoppus' while the remaining tracks seem to be in the style of Hoppus. As for the sonics, both guys are veterans at creating music in the studio with Hoppus having some insane studio credits. So of course, this EP sounds great. As far as music goes, there's not a song among these six songs that sounds like anything else on this EP. Everything is different from track to track and that's what makes it as good of a listen as it is.

Most of these projects don't last very long. They last long enough for an EP and then a few years down the road a surprise release, and that's about it. Hopefully Simple Creatures is something different. The songs are great, and the melodies and production are better. If you're a fan of Gaskarth or Hoppus, you'll find something you'll like here.
