Black Tide

Light From Above

Revival metal bands usually don't get the time of day, honestly because a lot of them aren't very good or very original. Black Tide though, isn't your typical revival metal band. Not only do these guys rock people's faces off, they’re doing it at an incredibly young age. Every member of Black Tide is under the age of 21 with lead singer Gabriel Garcia being only 15/16 years old! On their debut album "Light From Above" for Interscope, Black Tide shows musical maturation years and years ahead of metal bands that are in their mid to late 20's and they've put together an amazing metal experience for the listener. The single "Shockwave" rocks and the closing title track "Light From Above" is a metal ballad of epic proportions; And everything in between those two tracks is remarkably made for kids playing this type of music at this young age- they've even got a cover of Metallica's "Hit the Lights" that actually holds up to the original. The only negative aspect of Black Tide is at its core. They sound like an 80's metal band, which is good and bad. It's good because these guys definitely have an appreciation for good music and have the talent to pull off an album like this at such a young age. On the other side of that it's bad because every metal fan has heard songs like this before. Black Tide shouldn't modernize their sound for active rock or anything ridiculous like that, but there are things that can be done that can give them their own unique identity in the world of metal. It will be interesting to see if they can develop their own identity. If you're getting signed to record deal in your teens you're doing something right. If you are signing a band in their teens as a label, hopefully you're in it long term to develop something great. And greatness can definitely be done with a band with as much potential as Black Tide. This is a good debut but not anything like you'll see from these guys in five years if they can overcome all of the obstacles that come with being this young and being this good.
